I took my kids to see a minor league baseball game recently, to watch the Boise Hawks play. They've never gone, so my wife and I didn't know what to expect. I was secretly expecting them to complain about being bored and asking to go home to play Mario Kart.
I didn't actually get to see too much of the game. At first I was disappointed, but the time I spent during the game was watching both of my boys have fun on the two bouncy houses the stadium set up for the kids to enjoy. It's really a genius idea. A lot of kids can't sit still for an entire baseball game, and it's unfair to them to have that expectation. They want to run, jump, laugh and play games. Baseball doesn't check any of those boxes for them.
While I didn't get to watch a lot of the game, I got to make priceless memories with them that will long outlast a baseball game. We talked about how the game works. My youngest son rode a giant inflatable pillar in the bounce house like it was a "horsey." My oldest son loved the inflatable slide that dropped 30 feet.
Towards the evening, the visiting team saw both of the boys and gave them game balls. They were ecstatic! When my oldest son left with my wife to go to the bathroom, I saw the home team's mascot, Humphrey the Hawk behind us, taking pictures with the fans. I happened to spy a black Sharpie in his hand and saw him autographing a baseball. I ran over with the two balls and snagged an autograph for each of the boys.
My wife and oldest son were shocked when I showed them the autographed balls. How often do you get one game ball, much less two, and each of them autographed by the home team mascot? My boys couldn't stop talking about it all the way home. I don't remember much of the game, but I remember the bouncy houses, the laughs, the cries of excitement and those huge adorable smiles!
And that's just the way it should be.
