I've recently taken up restoring Pokémon cards as a hobby. I collect them, so why not find fixable cards in less-than-ideal condition to buy cheap, fix, then add to my collection?

I originally started working on fixing dings and dents. I even completely hid a scratch on an Ancient Mew card I purchased.

After that I moved on to the hardest restoration of all: creases. In theory, you can never fully eliminate a crease. You can make them much less noticeable, to the point you'd need a magnifying glass to find the imperfections. That's my goal.

I started with this inexpensive reverse holo Lampent.

I creased it myself. Pretty nasty, right?

I got to work with some tools of the trade, to help work out the creases. The first thing I had to do is humidify the card to make the interior fibers pliable.

Once it's pliable, your best friends are going to be one of these small clay modeling tools and a penny sleeve.

The idea is to massage the ridges back into place while using the penny sleeve to avoid scratching the foil.

Another tool I use is this stainless steel facial massager.

It helps smooth out dents and is great for the first few passes to get the really aggressive ridges pushed back down.

After working the creases down, I don't want the creases expanding back out. To "lock in" the changes I introduced, I need heat, pressure and time to cool back down. That's where a heat press comes in handy.

After multiple passes, it looks much better. The creases are still visible, but they're not nearly as prominent.

I'm still working on honing my skills further with the goal of making them so hard to detect that people would think I took a pristine copy of a card and tried to pass it off as "restored." The process continues!
