Ostatni tydzień przypominał akcję komedii z 1969 roku "Jeśli dziś wtorek, to jesteśmy w Belgii". Codziennie staraliśmy się zabrać naszych gości w inne miejsce, w piątek wybraliśmy się do Kolonii. Sami chcieliśmy przypomnieć sobie to niemieckie miasto w Nadrenii Północnej-Westfalii, byliśmy tam ponad dziesięć lat temu, ale wtedy pogoda była fatalna i oprócz spektakularnej katedry niewiele utkwiło w naszej pamięci.

[ENG] The last week was reminiscent of the plot of the 1969 comedy “If today is Tuesday, we are in Belgium”. Every day we tried to take our guests to a different place; on Friday we went to Cologne. We wanted to reminisce about this German city in North Rhine-Westphalia ourselves, we had been there more than ten years ago, but then the weather was terrible and apart from the spectacular cathedral not much stuck in our memory.

[ENG] We began our tour of the city, of course, with Hohe Domkirche St. Peter und Maria, or the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Mary. The construction of the present Gothic church began in 1248 and continued intermittently for more than 600 years until 1880. The more than 150-metre-high towers, which form a distinctive feature of the city skyline from the Rhine, date from the 19th century.

[ENG] I remembered from a previous visit that right next to the cathedral is the Hohenzollernbrücke, which is a railway bridge with a pedestrian and bicycle bridge. Hundreds of thousands of padlocks are pinned on the bridge. The former old town has been considerably damaged by the war effort, the old townhouses have been replaced by new ones, some of which hark back to the old character of the old town, but the vast majority are not very interesting buildings from the 1950s. Overall the weather was good and we saw much more than the first time, hopefully more we will also remember.
