Snow festival in Sapporo (Festival of snow figures in Sapporo).
In 1953, for the first time, a snow figure of 15 meters high was erected - Söten (Ascending into Heaven). In 1955, the Japanese self-defense troops took part in the festival, thanks to their help the festival was held with an unprecedented scale. In 1959, for the 10th anniversary of the festival, 2500 people took part in making snow figures, and the event was first described on television and in newspapers. Thanks to the efforts of the media, since 1960, more and more tourists and participants from all corners of Japan have come to the Sapporo snow festival - the popularity of the festival is growing "like a snowball."
In 1972 Sapporo became the capital of the Winter Olympic Games, and the Snow Festival, held this year under the motto "Welcome to Sapporo!", Became known far beyond Japan. In 1974, Japan was shocked by the "oil shock", but the Snow Festival was held as usual. Because of the lack of gasoline, trucks could not deliver enough snow to the site of the festival, and empty barrels crammed with snow, on the basis of which snow figures were then constructed. In the same year, the first international contest of snow figures was held. Now the Snow Festival in Sapporo is held on three venues and gathers more than two million people for seven days!
