Before our debate, I honestly thought Idealism and Realism were just two philosophies that we needed to understand for our class. I expected it to be mostly about reading concepts, preparing arguments, and defending our assigned side. But while preparing for the debate, I realized that these philosophies can actually make us think about a bigger question: What should education really give to learners?
As an Education student, I became more interested in Idealism because it focuses on the mind, ideas, values, and character. Realism, on the other hand, focuses more on facts, observation, and understanding the real world. During our preparation, I noticed that both ideas can be seen in a classroom.
For example, learners need factual knowledge. They need to understand Science, Mathematics, language, and the world around them. But learning should not stop at knowing facts. Learners also need values such as honesty, responsibility, respect, and kindness. A learner may know the right answer, but education can also help them understand how to use what they know in a responsible way.
This made me reflect on the kind of teacher I want to become someday. I don鈥檛 want my learners to study only because they need to pass an exam or get a good grade. I want them to understand their lessons and see how these lessons can be connected to their lives.
Our debate also taught me that education is not simply about choosing between ideas and reality. Knowledge helps us understand the world, while values can guide us in how we respond to it.
Maybe that is what makes teaching meaningful. We are not only preparing learners to live in the real world. We are also helping them develop the kind of mindset and character they can bring into that world.
And as a future teacher, I hope I can teach both the mind and the person behind it.
