When we hear the words “free speech,” we usually think that we have the right to say what we think.
And yes, I believe that people should have the freedom to express their opinions.
But then I started thinking…
Does free speech mean we can say anything we want, even if our words are already hurting other people?
For me, this is where hate speech becomes complicated.
Sometimes people say hurtful things and simply call it a joke. Sometimes they say, “It’s just my opinion.” But what if the same words are being used to attack a person or a group because of who they are?
Even if there is no physical harm, I don’t think we can just say that there is “no harm at all.”
Words can affect people too.
They can make someone feel embarrassed, unwanted, or afraid to speak. And sometimes, other people may start believing those hateful words and treat that person or group differently.
But I also understand why some people are worried about making hate speech a criminal offense.
Not every offensive statement should automatically be considered hate speech.
People have different opinions. We will disagree with each other. Sometimes we will hear something we don’t like.
That doesn’t always mean someone should be punished just because we found their opinion offensive.
For me, there should be a clear difference between disagreeing with someone and intentionally attacking people because of who they are.
We should be able to say:
“I don’t agree with you.”
without turning it into:
“You don’t deserve respect because you are different from me.”
At the end of the day, freedom of speech is important, but I also think that having freedom means having responsibility.
We have the freedom to speak, but we also have the choice of how we use our words.
So I’m still left with one question:
If words can hurt people, where should we draw the line between free speech and hate speech?
I honestly want to hear different opinions about this one. 👀
