Hello, internet people! How are you? Today I want to share my opinion about a book I was reading a few days ago. I recently started working as a nanny, and the child I care for is only four months old, so I can't read him stories. However, while taking him to his therapies, I had the opportunity to read a very interesting book they had in the waiting room, which I plan to read to my son when he's old enough to understand what I'm talking about because it's truly worthwhile.
This is The Invisible Thread by Miriam Tirado. This book tells the story of Nura, a very lively and curious little girl. She loves it when her mother bathes her because she always says sweet things like, "Let's wash those little hands really well so you can hold things." However, while her mother was soaping her tummy, Nura became curious about something that caught her attention: her belly button. "What's the belly button for?" she asked her mother. Her mother wisely replied with something that still brings tears of tenderness to my eyes: "The belly button is where we have the most beautiful and best-kept secret: the invisible thread."
Later, Nura's mother explains that an invisible thread comes out of the navel, serving as a connection to other people we love very much. In fact, she gives a key example: "An invisible thread comes out of your navel and connects to my navel." This connection is very important because it means that the people you love most are with you even when you cannot see or touch them.
Upon finishing it, I realized that the book, despite being a very simple story and even easy for children to read, is actually a valuable educational tool for instilling lessons about empathy and emotional intelligence. It helps children understand that physical separation doesn't have to affect feelings because neither time nor distance can break the thread that connects us to the people we cherish most. In this way, I think it could help children overcome their fear of loss or separation, for example, when they have to go to school for the first time.
And despite being a book made for children, even young children, I think its valuable teaching can also reach adults, especially those who struggle to manage their emotions, or forget that there are bonds that unite us beyond time and distance.
There's a part I really liked because it explains this connection very well and simply. Nura, naturally, wonders how she can know if this connection really exists, since she can't see or touch the thread. But her mother explains that it's exactly the same as other things in the world, things that are there even though they can't be seen or touched, like love or the smell of flowers. These are things that are there, and you can almost feel them, but in reality, you can only perceive them, sense them. That's how the connection we have with people and even animals, who are so important in our lives, is.
