I finished the book and immediately started writing this review. In my opinion, it's a book with many nuances but an incredible ability to captivate the reader for hours, so I really finished it quickly—and how could I not? I couldn't put it down. It's a psychological thriller that tells the story of Millie, a woman with a dark past who tries to start a new life working as an assistant in the Winchester household. However, she soon discovers that Nina Winchester (the lady of the house) is behaving strangely and erratically. At the same time, Millie discovers that the entire family is full of dark secrets, so she feels increasingly unsafe, especially in her small attic room that she can only lock from the outside.
Terminé el libro e inmediatamente después comienzo a redactar esta review, a mi parecer es un libro con muchos matices pero con una capacidad increíble para atrapar al lector por horas, así que realmente lo terminé rápido ¿y cómo no? si no podía parar de leer. Se trata de un thriller psicológico que nos cuenta la vida de Millie, una mujer con un oscuro pasado que trata de vivir una nueva vida trabajando como asistente en casa de los Winchester. Sin embargo poco tiempo después descubre que Nina Winchester (la señora de la casa) tiene un comportamiento extraño y errático, al mismo tiempo Millie va descubriendo que la familia entera está llena de muchos secretos turbios, así que cada vez se siente más insegura, en especial en su pequeña habitación del ático que solo cierra por fuera.
The author has a very skillful style for capturing the reader's attention, which lies primarily in her way of describing places and the characters' feelings. However, I believe the most striking aspect of the novel lies in its astonishing plot twists: just when you think the story is heading in one direction, it takes a completely different one, but it does so organically, which makes it feel realistic. I admired the protagonist's ability to turn difficult situations to her advantage, using her hard past (which for a time had been a heavy burden to bear) precisely as a ladder of salvation.
La autora del libro tiene un estilo muy hábil para captar la atención del lector que radica más que todo en su manera de describir los lugares y sensaciones de los personajes. Sin embargo yo creo que lo más impactante de la novela radica en sus asombrosos giros de trama: cuando crees que la historia se encamina hacia un rumbo resulta que toma uno muy diferente, pero lo hace de manera muy orgánica, lo cuál la vuelve realista. Admiré la capacidad de la protagonista para revertir situaciones difíciles a su favor, utilizando su pasado duro (que por un tiempo había sido un peso difícil de llevar) precisamente como una escalera de salvación
The characters are neither flat nor overly complex; they're quite realistic. The story's pace is brisk, constantly shifting between mystery and intrigue, which keeps you from getting bored. But beyond all this, beyond the author's skill, I think her intention is to critique the manipulation and abuse of power that can cause so much harm, while simultaneously celebrating humanity's capacity to survive in hostile situations and sometimes even turn difficult circumstances to their advantage.
Los personajes no son ni planos ni demasiado complejos, son más bien muy realistas, el ritmo de la obra es ágil, constantemente te mueves entre el misterio y la intriga, así que esto evita que te aburras. Pero más allá de todo esto, de la habilidad de la autora, creo que lo que ella pretende es criticar la manipulación y el abuso de poder que tanto daño pueden generar, pero al mismo tiempo enaltecer la capacidad que tiene el ser humano para sobrevivir en situaciones hostiles y a veces revertir situaciones difíciles a su favor.
