Corruption is a horrible cancer that I wouldn't wish on anyone. I'm Venezuelan and I'm experiencing it firsthand.
I studied almost my entire life, until I was 59. I earned every degree I could with the intention of being able to retire and live off my retirement. With the rampant corruption of my country's dictatorship, my salaries and pensions combined don't even reach the average wage.
At this stage of my life, at 76, I'm forced to pray for government bonuses, make "susu" for food, and I always find myself anguished, wondering, "When will the next bag of food from the government arrive?"
And I write this with my soul and heart full of tears, and my face too.
This is the reality of many elderly people around the world. Yes, around the world. Imagine my surprise when my daughter showed me the conversation with her friend in New York, telling her how she lives day to day, at 79 years old.
This phenomenon is global, and as an educator, I say the problem begins in schools, where people are not taught how to think or subjects that help them cope with life's challenges, since only a small percentage of the population has access to university.

Estudi茅 casi toda mi vida, hasta los 59 a帽os, acumul茅 todos los t铆tulos possibles con la intenci贸n de poder retirarme y vivir de mi retiro y con la corrupci贸n campante de la dictadura de mi pa铆s, mis salarios y pensiones todas en total no llegan al salario promedio.
En 茅sta etapa de mi vida, con 76 a帽os, me veo obligado a orar por los bonos del gobierno, hacer " susu" de comida y siempre me sorprendo angustiada pregunt谩ndome 驴cuando llegar谩 la pr贸xima bolsa de comida del gobierno?
Y escribo 茅sto con el alma y con el coraz贸n lleno de l谩grimas, tambi茅n el rostro.
Esta es la realidad de muchas personas de la tercera edad en el mundo. Si, en el mundo. Imaginen mi sorpresa cuando mi hija me mostr贸 la conversaci贸n con su amigo en New York, cont谩ndole como vive al d铆a, a sus 79 a帽os.
Este fen贸meno es mundial y como educadora lo digo, el problema empieza en las escuelas, donde no se les ense帽a a las personas a pensar, o materias que ayuden a enfrentar los embates de la vida, ya que un peque帽o porcentaje de la poblaci贸n tiene acceso a la universidad.
