I've been very curious about the advertising industry since I came to the realization that everything came down to a trade.
You see, the tiny detail most people miss in every day life is that every interaction is a transaction, directly or indirectly.
Whether or not that translates to income or loss depends largely on how good the advertising was.
Of course, we must consider that marketing is the broader process here and there are various contributing factors, but because I want to specifically talk about ads, I will sometimes drive my points home as if they can flexibly be used interchangeably.
I decided this year that I was going to get involved with designing ads, such as what's seen above and my content here will increasingly reflect this new direction.
To introduce this new interest, I designed this today. I believe I'll mostly be talking about the idea behind each ad I design and what I learn along the way.
Does the ad need explaining?
When I designed this today, all I could think about was if viewers would be confused when they interact with it.
I think a good ad should not need to be explained, unless that's part of the concept.
That said, since we're dealing with banner ads here, sometimes it is expected that people may not fully grasp what a business is selling by viewing one ad, this is understandably why sometimes, we come across scenarios where several ads are often served for a single product launch.
As a collection, the message often becomes clearer.
Notwithstanding, there's a difference between:
"Oh, that's interesting, I wonder if I'd need this."
And
"What does this even mean."
On one hand, a viewer isn't completely clear on how a business's product or service may be relevant to them and are likely to click to learn more, whilst on the other hand, the ad comes off as completely confusing and is likely to be skipped.
Essentially bad!
I felt really good designing this one. I know it's just text in a box with colors, but that's the thing, I love text ads, because it's like turning writing (something I already love doing) into something colorful and intriguing beyond what black ink on white sheets could do.
I'm excited about sharing more of what I create and it's important to note that all brands represented across every piece do not exist and if the names, colors, messaging or fonts ever match an existing business, it's unintended.
I'll try to minimize that happening in any ad designs. Your thoughts on the ads are appreciated.
How do you feel about this ad?
