They look like simple, innocent decorations – figurines that someone has placed in full view of passers-by, unaware that they are being watched as they walk by, especially by those who do not regard them as mere chance occurrences.

Some are seated, others strike a sinister pose; one offers something on his tray, whilst others have been unable to escape. A feast for a special day that promises fun and an extraordinary evening, full of fancy dress, colours and frights, whilst their eyes watch intently to catch that curious glance that draws them in.

Waiting expectantly behind the glass, motionless and seemingly eyeless, they watch the children approaching to see the attraction, many of them accompanied by their parents who may well give in to their little ones’ pleas, oblivious to what lies hidden behind the harlequin costumes: an endless torment.

For more than thirty days prior to the appointed date, they feed and strengthen themselves. The children’s joy and innocence, their gazes and smiles, are the perfect feast to fill them with life, a dark life that springs from the deepest, darkest depths of the nameless side, that realm from which comes that which cannot be seen but which chills the blood as it brushes the air against human skin.

They are the perfect vessels to inhabit, dolls that will be ready to serve as containers for the shapeless shadows, those that roam the worlds in search of the perfect victims, the most vulnerable ones, those who like to dress up, ask for a sweet, in a child’s innocent game of choosing their favourite horror character and bringing it to life.

They wait patiently for the month to end, feeding within those eyeless bodies, made of fabrics that attract those little ones, striking harlequins plucked from some film, which both amuse and frighten people. No one can suspect what they have come to steal from the world of the living, nor that on that day many will weep, yet without knowing for certain when it will all end.

Children crowd round the shop window, pointing at the dolls and asking their parents for a fancy dress costume, a mask or a decoration to celebrate. But what matters is not that they buy anything, but that the gaze of the most innocent is fixed upon them, reinforcing their power. The more gazes and attention there are, the more sustenance there is for the darkness and the evil clad in black.

The day is drawing near and they are ready to shed those costumes with their macabre smiles and strange attire, and to leave behind those lifeless, empty eyes through which they have fed for several days. It is almost time to seek out those gazes that looked upon them, for those gazes reflect something unique in the world, something that is never repeated; no two are alike, nor will there ever be. They are the perfect trophy to amplify the darkness of the nameless side.

Every gaze is a soul; every child’s soul is a coveted jewel for its immense purity.

The little bodies began to fall to the ground, onto the streets, as if asleep in a deep slumber, their sweet little faces without smiles, their closed eyes no longer able to see. One after another, amidst laughter, games and sweets, they fell silent and their voices faded away.
