Carmen, a cheerful 80-year-old woman, was overjoyed—the sparkle in her eyes gave her away. That afternoon, she came home, as she did on many afternoons, after spending several hours chatting with some neighbors in the neighborhood park.
That day, her friend Juana brought over a board game that, if Carmen remembered correctly, was called something like Trivial. And so, until sunset, the hours flew by amid smiles, questions, and answers.
When she got home, she sank into her favorite sofa, from which she gazed at the photographs of her late husband. His sudden death—just after he had retired—had shattered her life. Death had snatched away from her, without warning, what she longed for most… to share her final years with the love of her life, her one and only love.
Once she had gotten past the slight unease caused by the tragic memory, Carmen resumed her nightly routine. She prepared a light dinner and then entertained herself by watching a popular TV series. Surely, the next day, she would discuss the latest episodes with her neighbor Marina over their usual morning coffee and churros.
The latest twists in the series made for a thoroughly entertaining conversation. Ezequiel, the wealthy landowner who murdered his business partner Roberto out of greed, was flirting with his late partner’s daughter… Would there be a wedding? Would Marieta realize Ezequiel’s sinister intentions? Would the shady schemes of the corrupt police chief García be exposed? Was there a cure for young María’s strange illness?
The meeting with Marina didn’t disappoint. They talked at length about their favorite series. Marina was certain that Archibaldo, Roberto’s eldest son, would return from exile to bring justice… However, Carmen was certain that the key lay with Commissioner García, an accomplice to Ezequiel’s misdeeds…
The day went on as usual, and around 7:00 p.m., Carmen left the house and headed toward the park, confident that she would once again enjoy a few entertaining hours until her return.

However, that day was different—she didn’t end up meeting up with her friends. On the way, as fate would have it, Carmen came across a kitten.
She heard a meow, and after following the sound, she discovered a tiny kitten looking at her with helpless eyes. A little ball of soft fur that, it seemed, had gotten lost. A creature that seemed to say: “Take me in—I have no one to care for me.”
The fragility radiating from the little creature didn’t leave Carmen unmoved, and she picked it up very carefully from the ground. The little creature calmed down and seemed to curl up contentedly in the elderly woman’s arms.
The same could not be said for Carmen, who, feeling very anxious, spent hours searching for the kitten’s mother without any success. Finally, she decided to take the fluffy ball home—it was just too pitiful to leave behind.
The next day began in an unusual way. She and her friend Marina didn’t talk about Ezequiel but instead discussed the rescue of the cat. Carmen was looking for someone to take care of the kitten. Marina promised to talk to her children to see if any of them would be willing to adopt the helpless animal.
When she said goodbye to her friend, she headed to the vet’s office. The morning slipped away there, though at least by the time she left, she already knew how to prepare the bottles to feed him, and for the first time since she’d found him, she felt that maybe she could keep him alive until she found him a permanent home.

Days and weeks went by. The little guest already had a name: she was called Luna… and she wasn’t a male cat—she was a female cat, a beautiful female cat.
Little by little, Luna became the center of Carmen’s life. Not that that was surprising… the cat made Carmen feel like the true center of the universe. She followed her everywhere; they played and slept together. As the saying goes, they were as close as two peas in a pod…
Her relationship with her new housemate gradually eroded her relationships with her friends. With the first feedings, the lack of sleep, and exhaustion came the first excuses for missing her afternoon get-togethers. As time went on, the excuses and absences became more and more frequent.
Her get-togethers with Marina, which had provided her with so many pleasant moments, also became increasingly infrequent until they eventually stopped altogether…
Carmen was never available for anyone; she even stopped answering phone calls. Then, on December 21, the phone stopped ringing. It didn’t matter; Carmen was very happy—perhaps happier than she had ever been.
When she was at home, the cat followed Carmen wherever she went, giving her little headbutts on the legs, as if to say, “I’m right here.” When she sat down, Luna, who quickly settled onto Carmen’s lap, purred, her sweet gaze caressing Carmen’s happy face.
It wasn’t unusual for the two friends—one big, one small—to chat about anything and everything, or for the human friend to refer to the cat as: my sweetheart, my darling, my little girl, my treasure…
The photos of her late husband no longer stirred any feelings… all her love was for Luna, that little being who made her feel so special, so unique.
At three months old, the cat seemed a bit puffier and, of course, had a bigger appetite. The vet had no doubt after examining Luna. She was pregnant. The situation was truly strange—Luna had never left the house—but what really mattered was that everything went well.
Carmen was thrilled by the news. She could easily imagine herself caring for her new “children.” She was clearly anxious; she didn’t want anything to go wrong. She pampered Luna like never before, and at any sign of “abnormality,” she quickly consulted the vet. Everything was going well—or very well—until that morning when Luna disappeared.

It must have been around 9:00 AM when Carmen woke up and noticed that Luna wasn’t in bed as usual.
She felt a slight tightness in her chest, though she tried to calm herself. “She must be somewhere in the house,” she told herself to calm down. Besides, it made sense—there wasn’t a single way for her to have escaped.
Darkness filled the room, so she pulled up the blinds with great vigor. The room was suddenly flooded with light, though the sunlight revealed no trace of the missing girl.
Carmen moved furniture, opened drawers, and cried out desperately, “My darling!” in every corner, as if her own life depended on it. She scoured the neighborhood from top to bottom, filling the streets with posters bearing her cat’s photo and name. She called her friends… asked at all kinds of stores… and nothing.
She spent her nights awake. Amid her ruminations, hours passed that felt like millennia:
Her initial energy gradually faded… a clean, bright house turned into a dark, dirty place. With the blinds drawn 24 hours a day, dust eating away at the furniture, and an unpleasant, acrid smell, a fragile and helpless Carmen sat there… wasting away as she sat in front of a framed photo of Luna…
She no longer cried… her tears had long since dried up.

Days passed until a deep sense of grief swept through the neighborhood. The news reported that a woman in her 80s had been found dead in her home. With no signs of violence, it was yet another case of a lonely death—nothing unusual—and it certainly wasn’t, nor would it be, the last such case.
After this initial shock, life returned to its normal rhythm, and the grim event gradually faded from the neighborhood’s memory.
Months went by… The day was proceeding as usual… and around 7:00 p.m., Aurora, an elderly woman in her 80s, left her home on her way to the park, confident that she would once again enjoy a few pleasant hours until her return.
On her way, she heard a meow, and upon looking in the direction of the sound, she discovered a tiny kitten staring at her with helpless eyes. A little ball of soft fur that, it seemed, had gotten lost. A creature that seemed to be saying: Take me in—I have no one to care for me.
Aurora recogió con ternura al pequeño… Sólo serán unos días, se dijo.-

Aurora gently picked up the little boy… “It’ll only be a few days,” she told herself.—
