Ángela was lying on her bed, looking at celebrations of Halloween in other countries on her cellphone. She found the costumes some of the people posting had chosen amusing, and wished there were similar festivities in her town. After all, even the traditions of her own country’s culture were no longer celebrated as they had been before the pandemic that had ravaged the world.
With a deep sigh, she looked away from the glowing screen and walked over to the weathered wooden window in her bedroom. She opened it a little to breathe in the fresh air. The smell of damp earth quickly filled her nostrils. She noticed a strange fog over the mountain. Although there was nothing extraordinary about it, she found it odd that it hadn’t been there an hour ago. A growing chorus of murmurs came from that direction, making her think something was happening—something bad.
Then her dog, Castor, began barking, waking half the neighborhood. People started shouting from their houses, telling her to shut the animal up. A flickering light from her cousin’s house next door first illuminated Castor, then swept toward the dark path he was barking at. A blurry figure could be seen through the gloom.
One of the neighbors came out into the street with a machete in his hand, hoping to intimidate the stranger. When that didn’t have the desired effect, he decided to shout at him:
—Hey, you! What are you doing here?
Ángela leapt out of her bedroom to try to calm her dog, who was still barking uncontrollably. At last, everyone could see the stranger clearly: he walked like a drunk and looked as though he were in costume. Her first thought was that it was a prank, since the date coincided with Halloween celebrations in other cultures. But then she began to feel afraid. The creature looked unnatural, and the sound of its heavy breathing was not normal.
—Stop!—Ángela shouted, holding Castor back.
—Let go of the dog!—her cousin’s husband yelled at her.
But she didn’t hesitate. At that very moment, the stranger stopped for a second and began to howl. It was such a terrifying roar that the hair on her and everyone else’s skin stood on end. With savage, overwhelming violence, the creature charged toward them.
—Get inside the house!—her neighbor shouted, bracing himself for what was coming.
Ángela took refuge in the house, Castor barking in her arms. The other men in the neighborhood began to come out, armed with machetes, pickaxes, and knives. Then, suddenly, they saw more figures just like the stranger emerge from the shadows. They weren’t Halloween costumes: the dead were rising from the cemetery in the mountains.
Anxious and desperate for some sense of safety, Ángela secured the doors and windows with boards, sticks, and whatever furniture she could move. Suddenly, she began to gasp for air and felt intensely dizzy.
She went to the door and peered through a crack. Her neighbors were fighting for their lives against the zombies, who wore bloodstained rags and had rotting skin and terrifyingly lifelike, empty eyes. More appeared every minute.
In that town where no one had ever celebrated Halloween, that night became a nightmare in which the dead decided to walk among the living.
—¡Detente!—gritó Ángela aguantando a Castor.
