After writing my first music review about Dave's “Lesley,” I started thinking about other songs that actually feel like more than songs, and , “Stan” by Eminem immediately came to mind. I remember listening to it a long time ago and it brought out another perspective or side to Eminems style of music and rap . I think this is one of those songs that shows just how powerful storytelling in music can be. You don't just listen to “Stan” you follow a story. By the time the song ends, you almost feel like you've been watching somebody's life fall apart in front of you, it feels like you were listening to a novel or a storybook.
The first for me is the concept. Eminem tells the story through a series of letters written by a fan named Stan, who becomes increasingly obsessed with him. At the beginning, it feels harmless. Stan is simply a huge fan trying desperately to get Eminem's attention but as the song progresses, you realise that something is seriously wrong. His admiration gradually becomes obsession, and the messages become increasingly disturbing. What makes it work so well is that Eminem doesn't just tell you that Stan is obsessed. He lets you watch it happen, reminds me of the movie Obessission . Lol!
This where I think Eminem's storytelling is at its best. Each verse moves the story forward, and you start understanding Stan's state of mind without needing somebody to explain it to you. Then Eminem responds from his own perspective, and suddenly you get another side of the story. The whole thing feels like a conversation between two people who are never really in the same room. The production is also a huge part of why the song works. That haunting sample from Dido's “Thank You” immediately gives the song a melancholic feeling. It doesn't sound like a typical aggressive Eminem track. It almsot feels like youre watching a movie.
Eminem's delivery is also amazing, he changes his voice and tone depending on which part of the story we're hearing, and that makes Stan feel like an actual person rather than just a character created for a song. You can hear the desperation, anger and obsession developing as the verses continue. That's probably what makes the song so good. Eminem isn't simply rapping words over a beat, he is acting through the song. The ending is probably the part that hits the hard because of the realisation that comes with it. Suddenly you're looking back at the earlier verses differently, and you realise how carefully Eminem constructed the entire story.
What I also find interesting is that “Stan” isn't simply about an obsessed fan. There is a bigger conversation underneath the story about celebrity, social relationships and what happens when someone becomes emotionally attached to a public figure they don't actually know. Its almost like a sickness, Stan thinks Eminem understands him because he listens to his music, but Eminem obviously cannot know everything happening in Stan's life. That distance between a celebrity and their audience is something we still see everywhere today, especially with social media.
If "Lesley” made me appreciate Dave's storytelling, then “Stan” is probably one of the songs that showed me where this kind of storytelling could go. Eminem didn't need a music video to explain everything. He gave you the characters, the letters, the emotion and the situation, and somehow your imagination does the rest. Sit down, put your phone away and actually listen to it from beginning to end. I dare say “Stan” isn't just one of Eminem's best songs, it is one of the best examples of storytelling in music I've ever heard.
