Many of us have the most genuine love of all in our homes, and it comes from a special pet. But who are these special pets? The ones we have adopted after someone rescued and recovered them or the ones we have after having rescued them ourselves from the abandonment in which they found themselves on the streets.

And who is behind this beautiful adoption process? The rescuers or protectionists of animals in street situations. That is why today I decided to talk a little about this noble work they do in our country and in many others. Regardless of the place they occupy, whether it is a foundation, the state, or independently, what stands out is the big heart they have every time their instinct tells them that a little angel with a tail is in danger and must be protected in any way.

It is there where a long journey begins between the warning they give until the rescue is achieved. These warnings are usually made through social networks, which is the most common place to transmit certain situations with the animals, or also when the same protectionist goes down the street and detects a special case. Many times it crosses their minds the desire to have a very big place, a huge economic source and a gigantic team to rescue and protect them all, for the simple fact that they do not deserve to be wandering alone in the streets without love, care, food, and a safe home.

The whole process usually consists of: Detect them, rescue them, cure them, feed them, and put them up for adoption. But there are constantly cases in which the protectionist gets too attached to some of them to the point of adopting them, or the adoption process is not successful and they stay with the protectionist. In my particular case, it has happened to me many times that after the rescue I have become too fond of the animal and I keep it. That is why my herd grows so much. I have also given many of them up for adoption because I no longer have the space to keep them all by my side. My children and I have rescued 12, between puppies and kittens. Some of them I don't remember well because it was many years ago.

My love for this work began more than 20 years ago through a cousin who was a rescuer and what motivated me the most to do it was to experience the evolution of each one of these angels from their rescue until their quality of life improves. My cousin died recently and she was completely dedicated to this initiative, we would even go out and she would stop her car near the place where she had seen a puppy waiting for it to appear. She kept in the back of the car, bags of food for dogs and cats, kennel, leashes, ropes, chains, towels, first aid kit, and everything necessary for any rescue process that might arise. When she found the animal, little by little she approached him to give him confidence until she was able to do it, and put him in the car. Regarding going out prepared, a protectionist friend of mine, who supplies me with my dogs' anti-tick pills, recently told me:

"Whenever I go out on foot, I always carry in my backpack a box of anti-tick pills and small bags of food to give to any dog that I find hungry and in a deplorable state due to parasites in their skin... the duration of the effect of these pills is 6 months".

There are so many beings with a big heart performing this work, and even seeking financial support through donations, raffles, and help from other animal protectionists, friends and family, because for me it will always be an animal protectionist from the one who warned that there was a delicate situation to the one who gave himself to the task of rescuing him, through all the collaborators to provide the money, the car to move him, the supplies to cure and feed him, and even the temporary homes that protect them until they find someone to adopt them. It is a beautiful team full of nobility and love that as long as they work together they will continue to achieve these miracles every day.

I wanted to share in this publication the testimony of some protectionist friends, of the many I know in the city of El Tigre, and I asked them these questions to know a little of their trajectory:

• What motivated you to become a protectionist?
• What has been the rescue that has touched you the most?

Andreina Avellaneda (Engineer and Protectionist):

I have had sensitivity towards animals since I was a child because of an episode I lived when I was 8 years old in which a dog was run over in front of me, and when I told my mother to pick it up and take it to the vet, she replied that she could not because she had no money to do so.

From that moment on I decided that when I was able to work I was not going to allow something like that to happen again, that I would see an injured animal and not be able to do anything for it because of lack of money. One of my goals was to study veterinary medicine and I could not, but I graduated as an engineer and with my economic income I have been able to help animals in street situations. I have been dedicated to this initiative for exactly 15 years.

When I started working, my colleagues knew of my sensitivity towards animals because they saw me giving food to those who were in the environment, and one day they took me a very large dog that they had found run over on the side of the road with one of its legs infected and full of insects. He was very malnourished, and shy. I tied him up in a safe, covered place so that he would not walk until I could heal the wound, put food and water in him. I thought he would lose his paw, but after the treatment, surprisingly the animal looked as if nothing had happened to him, and he was adopted by the same person who rescued him.

This episode moved me to see that apart from a clinical treatment, the healing power of love and protection is miraculous, and from that moment on I trusted in this process when rescuing an injured animal and continued to do so, confident that it would be completely healed. All these situations are what have motivated me to continue being a protectionist.

Mariam Trías (English Teacher and Protectionist):

It was never in my plans to be a protectionist or rescuer. In fact, I never had dogs at home and I was even a little nervous about it. I didn't know anything about caring for them, I was learning with the help of our veterinarian and rescue friends. Everything changed in 2018, when my husband and I decided to adopt a little dog (from a shelter in our city) to keep us company, she would be our first dog daughter and my first pet. She passed away a few months later due to illness.

A few days later, we rescued another young dog from the street, the love of my life who has been with us for a little more than 4 years. A year later, we rescued our second furry son. The idea was to get him back and put him up for adoption, but after all we went through we decided to adopt him ourselves. He is a little old man who had to have two toes amputated from one of his hind legs due to an accident.

After these experiences, we have rescued, recovered and put up for adoption 8 dogs in the last 3 years. Each one of them is a different anecdote, a different case, a unique heart. In my mind, soul and heart are tattooed all their names and their grateful looks, even when two of them are no longer on this plane. They inspire me to continue rescuing, to do everything in my power to save their lives and give them a new and better opportunity.

Many times it has been with my own resources, sometimes with the support of friends and family. We have helped three of them to overcome the sticker tumor (a type of cancer) and the rest, to get out of malnutrition and enter a life of confidence, welfare and security. Being a rescuer and protectionist is a job that requires a lot of conscience and responsibility. It is of great value. Let's continue to educate and inspire.

Mariam's most recent rescue is Bombón, and all of us, in different ways, have been involved in her process, especially to give her the love she needed so much. Listening to all of you talk about your work makes me feel that being part of this group of protective angels is one of the most satisfying tasks in my life, and that I have loved all my rescues, those I have adopted and those I have given up for adoption, deeply.

Muchos de nosotros tenemos en nuestros hogares el amor más genuino de todos, y proviene de una mascota especial. ¿Pero quiénes son estas mascotas especiales? Las que hemos adoptado después que alguien las rescató y recuperó o las que tenemos después de haberlas rescatado nosotros mismos del abandono en que se encontraban en las calles.

¿Y quiénes están detrás de este hermoso proceso de adopción? Los rescatistas o proteccionistas de animales en situación de calle. Es por eso que hoy me motivé a hablar un poco de esta noble labor que desempeñan en nuestro país y en muchos otros. Independientemente del lugar que ocupen, bien sea una fundación, el estado, o de manera independiente, lo que cabe resaltar es el gran corazón que poseen cada vez que su instinto les indica que un angelito con cola está en peligro y debe ser protegido de cualquier manera.

Es allí donde comienza una larga travesía entre el aviso que dan hasta que se logra el rescate. Estos avisos por lo general se hacen a través de las redes sociales que es el lugar más común para transmitir determinadas situaciones con los animalitos, o también cuando el mismo proteccionista va por la calle y detecta un caso especial. Muchas veces cruza por la mente de ellos el deseo de poseer un lugar muy grande, una inmensa fuente económica y un equipo gigantesco para poder rescatarlos y protegerlos a todos, por el simple hecho de que no merecen estar deambulando solos por las calles sin amor, cuidados, alimento, y un hogar seguro.

El proceso completo, por lo general, consiste en: Detectarlos, rescatarlos, curarlos, alimentarlos, y darlos en adopción. Pero se dan constantemente casos en los que el proteccionista se encariña demasiado con alguno de ellos hasta el punto de adoptarlo, o que no se logra el proceso de adopción y se quedan con el proteccionista. En mi caso particular me ha sucedido en muchas oportunidades que después de realizar el rescate le he tomado demasiado cariño al animalito y me quedo con él. Por eso mi manada crece tanto. También he dado muchos en adopción por no tener ya espacio para conservarlos a todos a mi lado. Mis hijos y yo hemos rescatado a 12, entre perritos y gatitos. Algunos no recuerdo bien porque fue hace muchos años.

Mi amor por esta labor inició hace más de 20 años a través de una prima que era rescatista y lo que más me motivó a hacerlo fue experimentar la evolución en cada uno de estos ángeles desde su rescate hasta que mejora su calidad de vida. Mi prima murió recientemente y estaba entregada por completo a esta iniciativa, incluso salíamos y ella detenía su carro cerca del lugar donde había visto un perrito a la espera de que apareciera. Conservaba en la parte trasera del carro, sacos de alimento para perros y gatos, kennel, correas, sogas, cadenas, toallas, kit de primeros auxilios, y todo lo necesario para cualquier proceso de rescate que se presentara. Al encontrar al animalito, poco a poco se iba acercando a él para darle confianza hasta lograrlo, y subirlo al carro. Al respecto de salir preparados, una amiga proteccionista que me suministra las pastillas antigarrapatas de mis perros, me comentó recientemente:

”Yo siempre que salgo a la calle a pie, llevo en mi morral una caja de pastillas antigarrapatas, y pequeñas bolsitas de alimento para dárselas a cualquier perrito que me encuentro con hambre y en estado deplorable por los parásitos en su piel… el tiempo de duración del efecto de estas pastillas es de 6 meses”.

Son tantos seres con un gran corazón desempeñando esta labor, e incluso buscando apoyo económico a través de donativos, rifas, y ayuda de otros proteccionistas, amigos y familia, porque para mí será siempre un proteccionista de animales desde el que avisó que había una situación delicada hasta el que se dio a la tarea de rescatarlo, pasando por todos los colaboradores para suministrar el dinero, el carro para trasladarlo, los insumos para curarlo y alimentarlo, e incluso, los hogares temporales que los protegen hasta conseguir quien los adopte. Es un hermoso equipo lleno de nobleza y amor que mientras trabajen unidos seguirán logrando estos milagros cada día.

Quise compartir en esta publicación el testimonio de algunas amigas proteccionistas, de tantos que conozco en la ciudad de El Tigre, y les hice estas preguntas para conocer un poco de su trayectoria:

La sensibilidad hacia los animales la he tenido desde niña por un episodio que viví a mis 8 años en el que atropellaron a un perro delante de mí, y al decirle a mi madre que lo recogiera y lo lleváramos al veterinario, ella me respondió que no podía porque no tenía dinero para hacerlo.

Desde ese momento me propuse que cuando pudiera trabajar yo no iba a permitir que algo así volviera a suceder, que yo viera un animal herido y no pudiera hacer nada por él por falta de dinero. Una de mis metas fue estudiar Veterinaria y no pude, pero me gradué de Ingeniera y con mi ingreso económico he podido ayudar a los animales en situación de calle. Tengo exactamente 15 años entregada a esta iniciativa.

Cuando comencé a trabajar, mis compañeros sabían de mi sensibilidad hacia los animales porque me veían darles comida a los que se encontraban en el entorno, y un día me llevaron un perro muy grande que habían encontrado atropellado a la orilla de la carretera con una de sus patas infectadas y llena de insectos. Estaba muy desnutrido, y era tímido. Lo amarré en un sitio techado y seguro para que no caminara hasta que le pudiera curar la herida, le coloqué comida y agua. Pensé que perdería su patita pero después del tratamiento, sorprendentemente el animalito quedó como que si nada le hubiera pasado, y lo adoptó la misma persona que lo rescató.

Este episodio me conmovió al comprobar que aparte de un tratamiento clínico, el poder curativo que tiene el amor y la protección es milagroso, y desde ese momento confié en este proceso al momento de rescatar a un animal herido que lo seguí haciendo confiada de su sanación total. Todas estas situaciones son las que me han motivado a seguir siendo proteccionista.

Mariam Trías (Profesora de Inglés y Proteccionista):

Nunca estuvo en mis planes ser proteccionista o rescatista. De hecho nunca tuve perros en casa y hasta algo de nervios me daban. No sabía nada acerca del cuidado de ellos, fui aprendiendo con la ayuda de nuestro veterinario y amigas rescatistas. Todo cambió en el 2018, cuando mi esposo y yo decidimos adoptar a una perrita (de un refugio de nuestra ciudad) para que nos hiciera compañía, sería nuestra primera hija perruna y mi primera mascota. Ella falleció a los pocos meses por enfermedad.

A los pocos días, rescatamos de la calle a otra perrita joven, el amor de mi vida que ya tiene con nosotros, un poco más de 4 años. Pasado un año, rescatamos a nuestro segundo hijo peludo. La idea era recuperarlo y darlo en adopción, pero después de todo lo que pasamos decidimos adoptarlo nosotros. Es un viejito a quien tuvieron que amputarle dos dedos de una pata trasera, por un accidente.

Luego de estas experiencias, hemos rescatado, recuperado y dado en adopción a 8 perros en los últimos 3 años. Cada uno de ellos es una anécdota diferente, un caso distinto, un corazón inigualable. En mi mente, alma y corazón están tatuados todos sus nombres y sus miradas de agradecimiento, incluso cuando dos de ellos ya no están en este plano. Ellos me inspiran a seguir rescatando, hacer todo lo que esté en mis manos por salvar sus vidas y darles una nueva y mejor oportunidad.

Muchas veces ha sido con recursos propios, algunas veces con apoyo de amigos y familia. Hemos ayudado a tres de ellos a superar el tumor de sticker (un tipo de cáncer) y al resto, a salir de la desnutrición y a entrar en una vida de confianza, bienestar y seguridad. Ser rescatista y proteccionista es una labor que necesita mucha consciencia y responsabilidad. Es de mucho valor. Sigamos educando e inspirando.

El rescate más reciente de Mariam, es Bombón, y todos, de diferentes maneras, nos hemos involucrado en su proceso, sobre todo para brindarle amor que tanta falta le hacía. Escucharlas hablar a todas de su labor me hace sentir que formar parte de este grupo de ángeles protectores es una de las labores que más satisfacción me ha proporcionado en mi vida, y que a todos mis rescatados, los que adopté y los que di en adopción, los he amado profundamente.
