Lucrecia es la mascota más viejita que integra mi manada. Lleva dos años viviendo conmigo pero cerca de mí, lleva aproximadamente como unos 8 años. Cuando ella llegó a la urbanización estaba embarazada y algunos vecinos la alimentaron pero nadie la albergó en su casa. Supe lo que pasaba cuando parió y algunos vecinos tomaron posesión de los cachorros, pero aun así seguía deambulando por las calles del urbanismo.
Yo me fui ocupando de ella en cuanto a sus productos de higiene, sus desparasitantes, medicamentos para ehrlichiosis y alimentación, más sin embargo nadie quería que me quedara con ella porque alegaban que todos eran sus dueños y que el animalito cuidaba el lugar, hasta que asumí la responsabilidad de esterilizarla porque aparte del maltrato que sufría con aquella jauría detrás de ella, ya abortaba las crías a los pocos días, y como permanecía frente a mi casa casi siempre era un peligro aquel montón de perros allí pernoctando ante su periodo de celo.
Cuando solicité colaboración para la esterilización de Lucrecia y el tratamiento post operatorio, ya nadie era su dueño, me decían que esa perra era de la calle, que eso era demasiado dinero, en fin, suficientes razones de peso para encargarme de la situación y quedarme definitivamente con ella. Procedí a llevarla al veterinario, fue esterilizada, por su condición de viejita fue un proceso largo y delicado pero ella superó todo. Durante la operación pudieron visualizar unos tumores internos que de tener aún su aparato reproductor habrían comprometido esa zona, hasta ahora ha estado supervisada y los tumores no han causado molestias.
Ella se alimenta bien, duerme sobre una colchoneta en un espacio limpio, seco, y ventilado, ha subido de peso, su tratamiento para la Ehrlichiosis continúa cada periodo de tiempo, de la misma manera como sus desparasitantes tanto internos como externos, pero a pesar de ser una perrita sana y bien cuidada la vejez es inevitable. El doctor la revisó bien y me dijo que según sus características dentales, sus coditos, uñas, y otros detalles más, calcula que ella en la actualidad tiene entre 12 ó 13 años.
Hace unas semanas ella comenzó a presentar unos síntomas particulares: Debilidad, inapetencia, se orinaba y defecaba estando dormida, y no estaba activa como de costumbre. La llevé al veterinario y le tomaron la temperatura, tenía fiebre de 39.7°, le palpó la zona del estómago, hígado, riñones, pero para estar más seguro le hizo un eco abdominal. Aparentemente todo estaba bien, pero prefirió mandarle a hacer una serie de exámenes para determinar si había algún cuadro infeccioso. En efecto, los resultados indicaron que había una leve infección y le colocó un tratamiento de hidratación, antibióticos y protector gástrico.
Al orinarse, ella se siente incómoda y se trata de lamer sus patitas y la pancita, y eso le provocó una irritación en la piel. Para evitar eso, el doctor me indicó que debía limpiarla cada vez que se orinara, cambiarle las sabanitas, y pasarle un algodón con alcohol por las patitas y la cola. En el área de la pancita me mandó a colocarle Merthiolate, y ponerle una pechera para que no se lama la zona irritada. Este tratamiento ha sido efectivo porque la zona secó y ya no está irritada, y ella respondió bien al tratamiento de la infección.
Su alimentación ha estado conformada por caldos de pollo, carne, pescado, suero oral, sopas con hortalizas como auyama y papa, y su alimento seco se le humedece con el caldo.
LA INCONTINENCIA EN LOS PERRITOS MAYORES
Primero que nada voy a expresar un breve pero conciso concepto de la incontinencia. Es cuando se pierde control en la vejiga y la orina fluye sola sin poder evitarlo.
Los síntomas que nos indican que el perrito tiene incontinencia:
-Se pueden observar charquitos de orina en el suelo en la parte posterior del perrito mientras éste descansa.
-Las mantitas están húmedas.
-También se observan gotas o pequeños charcos de orina que deja en el suelo cuando va caminando
-Olor a orina en las mantas donde acostumbra dormir.
-Necesidad de beber más agua de lo normal.
-Aunque este síntoma no se puede observar, es bastante posible que sienta dolor al orinar.
Algunas recomendaciones clínicas son:
-Principalmente llevar a la mascota al veterinario para saber cuál es la causa de la incontinencia.
-Realizar los exámenes pertinentes.
-Tratar con antibióticos en caso de cistitis u otra infección urinaria.
-Tratamientos con medicamentos en base a hormonas para fortalecer el músculo que controla la orina.
CÓMO HE ABORDADO LA INCONTINENCIA EN LUCRECIA
La vejez es algo que a todos nos preocupa en nuestras mascotas porque sabemos que van a comenzar a presentarse situaciones inevitables, con el tratamiento que se le colocó a Lucrecia para la infección, la incontinencia ha cedido un poco, pero a veces no llega a tiempo al jardín y se hace pipí paradita y ella me ve con mucha angustia porque sé que es algo que la está haciendo sentir incómoda. Les mencionaré algunas de las medidas que he tomado ante esta situación:
-Cuando está adentro, trato de sacarla muy seguido o inmediatamente que come o toma líquido para que le dé tiempo de desocupar su vejiga y algo más.
-En la madrugada la dejo un rato en el jardín para que orine durante las horas que duermo. Ella se acuesta en un mueble que tiene un cojín muy cómodo, ya es de su propiedad.
-Durante el día trato de mantenerla adentro porque es peligroso que alguna mosca la perjudique por tener la zona orinada.
-Procuro limpiarla lo más seguido posible para evitar que ella lo haga y se irrite la piel.
-Le doy mucho amor para demostrarle que estoy con ella y que la voy a apoyar todo lo que me sea posible, y sé que ella lo entiende porque sus ojitos me hablan solos.
