Far from the great love I feel for the December dates for being the most beautiful time of all, also every year on Christmas and New Year's Eve, I think of a situation that worries all of us who have pets, and many protectionists around the world. …it's about fireworks.
Fireworks may be a very beautiful spectacle, but its effect on our little animals is frightening, especially the triggers. It should be noted that this effect not only affects our pets, but also very young children and the elderly, even more so if they are very old and/or going through a delicate disease, such as Alzheimer's. My son tells me that this year at Christmas, my grandson panicked because of the rockets and had a nervous breakdown that was very difficult to control... and I remember that in the last days of my mother's life, precisely last Christmas, she she covered her ears when she heard the rockets and squeezed her eyes very hard... I understood that this tormented her, and I spent those hours of the New Year's Eve celebration between fighting for her to fall asleep peacefully and this would not affect her so much, and calming my pack that no longer knew where to hide.
Every time this happens, the little animals in the house get desperate, they run everywhere with their watery eyes and wide open, they cry, shed many tears, the puppies bark and howl desperately, they hide under the beds and furniture, the kittens get upset and look for any little hole in the house to hide, I even try to grab them and they don't let go because of how nervous they get, and the dogs, despite the fact that we caress them, do not stop shaking, it is a terrible state of shock that lasts for hours until the last rocket stops exploding, even, they do not calm down until many hours after the end of the pyrotechnic event.
Why are pets scared by fireworks?
For years we investigated the reason for this situation with veterinarians, protectionists, on the web, and with other pet owners and little by little we were reinforcing our knowledge in this regard. The sound emitted by the explosion of fireworks disturbs animals more because they have a more sensitive hearing organ than humans. For them this sound is perceived almost inside their ears, or too close, and of course, the effect haunts them.
Effects of fireworks on animals
As I said before, the main effect that fireworks cause in our pets is disturbing, it torments them extremely, but there is more damage than this torment, and that is how much it can affect their ears to the point of losing their hearing.
Other situations that are triggered in the middle of this fireworks show is that desperate pets run out into the street and get lost, others are run over by cars as they run disoriented through the streets and avenues, especially little animals living on the street. I remember that when Lucrecia still did not live with me and spent the night in the urbanization, she would run desperately from one place to another in the middle of the rockets, and I would open the gate of my house and give her something to eat so that she would enter and thus protect her in the middle of the rampage.
This puppy is up for adoption and belongs to a protectionist friend... she was hiding under a bed on Christmas Eve because of the rockets.
But not only puppies and cats suffer from these triggers, but also other animals that are in our environment, such as birds, horses, animals in zoos and farms, and all present the same feelings of anxiety, tremors, nervousness, they even become aggressive, they can urinate, defecate, vomit, suffer tachycardia, excess salivation (drool), and even suffer cardiac arrest.
How to reassure our pets during fireworks?
Below I will give you some recommendations on what to do with our dogs and cats in the middle of a fireworks event:
If it is in your possibilities, do not leave your animals alone. Try to stay with them in a room that is as isolated as possible, and with closed doors and windows.
Play with them to keep them distracted.
Do not chain them since in the same desperation they can be damaged when trying to let go.
If you are going out, leave them in a safe room with a light on, with toys nearby, and with a TV or radio on to dissipate triggers a bit.
Do not let them loose in the yard with a low wall or bars as they may try to jump and injure themselves, or get lost and/or have accidents outside when they go out aimlessly.
Don't try to calm cats by carrying them because they get more nervous.
They look for high places to take shelter, tables, shelves, or refrigerators, leave them there.
Close the doors and windows well so that they do not escape and go out into the street disoriented.
At this moment apart from my three kittens, there is only one puppy left in my pack, Snoopy, and he is nervous by himself, it is his nature due to the conditions he was in when we rescued him, he is extremely hyperactive and the fireworks It multiplies your anxiety. On Christmas days I had to stay by his side, caress him to make him feel supported, and be inside the house with the noise of the air conditioning and some music in the environment to dull the triggers a bit, and be by his side to calm down a bit.
The cats all stayed on my bed, it is something quite significant but being there gives them security and peace of mind. Thank God, for whatever reasons, but there weren't that many fireworks this Christmas, but it's almost certain that by the arrival of the New Year, yes, and I already have to prepare the space to be with them for at least a while. couple hours.

Lejos del gran amor que siento por las fechas decembrinas por ser la época más bella de todas, también cada año en vísperas de navidad y año nuevo, pienso en una situación que nos preocupa a todos los que tenemos mascotas, y a muchos proteccionistas alrededor del mundo… se trata de la pirotecnia.
La pirotecnia podrá ser un espectáculo muy hermoso, pero su efecto en nuestros animalitos es espantoso, sobre todo los detonantes. Cabe destacar que este efecto no sólo repercute en nuestras mascotas, sino en niños muy pequeños y en ancianos, más aún si se encuentran en edad muy avanzada y/o atravesando alguna enfermedad delicada, como el caso del Alzheimer. Mi hijo me cuenta que este año en navidad, mi nieto entró en pánico por los cohetes y tuvo una crisis nerviosa muy difícil de controlar… y yo recuerdo que en los últimos días de vida de mi madre, precisamente en la navidad pasada, ella se tapaba sus oídos cuando escuchaba los cohetes y apretaba los ojos muy fuerte… comprendí que esto la atormentaba, y pasé esas horas de la celebración de fin de año entre luchar para que ella se durmiera tranquila y esto no la afectara tanto, y calmar a mi manada que ya no sabía dónde esconderse.
Cada vez que esto sucede, los animalitos en la casa se desesperan, corren para todos lados con sus ojitos aguados y muy abiertos, lloran, botan muchas lagrimitas, los perritos ladran y aúllan desesperados, se esconden debajo de las camas y los muebles, los gatitos se alteran y buscan cualquier huequito de la casa donde esconderse, incluso trato de agarrarlos y no se dejan por lo nerviosos que se ponen, y los perros, a pesar de que los acariciamos, no dejan de temblar, es un estado de conmoción espantoso que dura horas hasta que deja de explotar el último cohete, incluso, no se calman sino hasta muchas horas después de finalizar el evento pirotécnico.
¿Por qué se asustan las mascotas con la pirotecnia?
Durante años indagamos el porqué de esta situación con veterinarios, proteccionistas, en la web, y con otros dueños de mascotas y poco a poco fuimos reforzando nuestros conocimientos al respecto. El sonido emitido por la explosión de fuegos artificiales perturba más a los animales por tener un órgano auditivo más sensible que el de los humanos. Para ellos este sonido es percibido casi dentro de sus oídos, o demasiado cerca, y por supuesto, el efecto los atormenta.
Efectos de la pirotecnia en los animales
Como ya dije anteriormente, el principal efecto que ocasiona la pirotecnia en nuestras mascotas es perturbador, los atormenta en extremo, pero hay más daños aparte de este tormento, y es cuánto puede afectar sus oídos hasta el punto de perder la audición.
Otras situaciones que se desencadenan en medio de este espectáculo de fuegos artificiales es que las mascotas desesperadas se salen a la calle y se pierden, otros son arrollados por autos al correr desorientados por las calles y avenidas, sobre todo los animalitos en situación de calle. Recuerdo que cuando Lucrecia aún no vivía conmigo y pernoctaba por la urbanización, corría desesperada de un lado a otro en medio de los cohetes, y yo abría la reja de mi casa y le ponía algo de comer para que entrara y así resguardarla en medio del alboroto.
Esta cachorrita está en adopción y pertenece a una amiga proteccionista... así estaba escondida debajo de una cama durante esta nochebuena producto de los cohetes.
Pero no sólo los perritos y los gatos sufren por estos detonantes, también otros animales que se encuentran en nuestro entorno, como los pajaritos, los caballos, los animales en los zoológicos y las granjas, y todos presentan las mismas sensaciones de ansiedad, temblores, nerviosismo, incluso se tornan agresivos, se pueden orinar, defecar, vomitar, sufrir taquicardias, exceso de salivación (babeo), y hasta sufrir paros cardíacos.
¿Cómo tranquilizar a nuestras mascotas durante la pirotecnia?
A continuación les daré algunas recomendaciones de qué hacer con nuestros perros y gatos en medio de un evento pirotécnico:
-Si está en tus posibilidades, no dejes a tus animalitos solos. Trata de quedarte con ellos en una habitación lo más aislada posible, y con puertas y ventanas cerradas.
-Juega con ellos para que se mantengan distraídos.
-No los encadenes ya que en la misma desesperación pueden dañarse al intentar soltarse.
-Si vas a salir, déjalos en una habitación segura y con una luz encendida, con juguetes cerca, y con una TV o radio encendida para que disipe un poco los detonantes.
-No los dejes sueltos en el patio con una pared baja o de rejas ya que pueden intentar saltar y lastimarse, o perderse y/o sufrir accidentes fuera al salir sin rumbo.
-A los gatos no traten de calmarlos cargándolos porque se ponen más nerviosos.
-Ellos buscan sitios altos para resguardarse, mesas, estantes, o neveras, déjenlos allí.
-Cerrar bien las puertas y ventanas para que no se escapen y salgan desorientados a la calle.
En este momento aparte de mis tres gatitos, sólo queda un perrito en mi manada, Snoopy, y él de por sí es nervioso, ya es su naturaleza a raíz de las condiciones en que estaba cuando lo rescatamos, es hiperactivo en extremo y la pirotecnia le multiplica su ansiedad. En los días de navidad tuve que permanecer a su lado, acariciarlo para que se sintiera apoyado, y estar dentro de la casa con el ruido del aire acondicionado y algo de música en el ambiente para opacar un poco los detonantes, y estar a su lado para que se tranquilizara un poco..
Los gatos permanecieron todos sobre mi cama, es algo bastante significativo pero estar ahí les proporciona seguridad y tranquilidad. Gracias a Dios, por las razones que haya sido, pero no hubo tantos fuegos artificiales esta navidad, pero es casi seguro que para la llegada del año nuevo, sí, y ya tengo que ir preparando el espacio para estar con ellos al menos durante un par de horas.
