Some people believe that cats don’t notice things simply because they are less effusive than dogs; however, one only needs to live with a cat to learn how they express themselves and to realize that they are highly intelligent and emotional beings.
Tomorrow will mark one week since the painful loss of my cat, Rayitas. His brother, Blacky, and his mother, Mamita, have gone through a range of emotions and behavioral changes; fortunately, by this point in the week, they seem to have returned to their routines and regained some stability—though I suspect they may still miss Rayitas.
They were the ones who alerted us that something bad had happened to Rayitas; they kept moving in and out of the house, as if wanting us to follow them. The next day, it was clear that Rayitas’s absence was taking a heavy toll on them: Blacky sought out different places to sleep—moving away from the planter where he used to sleep beside his brother—and he also ate less than usual.
As for Mamita, she worried me the most. The day after, she lay in a corner of the garage for hours; nothing seemed to motivate her to get up. I even wondered if she was ill, but there were no signs of physical pain, so I concluded that she was simply grieving. Thankfully, cats are a living example of the fact that life goes on. They are calm now, and I hope they remain that way. As for me, I still miss my cat Rayitas terribly, though I try to ensure that my own mood doesn’t affect the others.
