I don't even know how to begin telling this story, but I feel it is necessary to mark this date as one of the most painful moments of my life; as you might have already gathered from the title, my cat Rayitas has died 😭.
Those who follow my posts in the community are well aware of Rayitas's journey since we welcomed him into our family last year. He hadn't even been with us for a full year, yet we had shared so many experiences—the last being his neutering surgery this past August. That is why, not even in my worst nightmare, did it ever cross my mind that I would lose him so tragically in the blink of an eye.
To provide some context: my house has a backyard and a front garden, and the entire property is enclosed by walls, a main gate, and a metal-grille gate. My cats usually stay within this perimeter from a young age, though naturally, once they learn to jump high enough to reach the top of the fence, they sometimes venture out into the street for short periods. It is something I cannot prevent, but they are always out briefly and have never gotten lost or hurt. Rayitas, however, was barely a year old and hadn't yet learned to jump the fence; he rarely went out, and when he did, it was only for a moment, slipping through the gap between the ground and the gate. That is why I never imagined he would get out without me noticing.
Yesterday, just as night was falling, my mom noticed Rayitas lying in the street near the corner, just a few meters from our house. When she got closer, she realized he was dead; he had been hit by a motorcycle 😭. Never in my life had I lost a cat in such a tragic and sudden way; I’ve spent the last few hours unable to process what happened. Time and again, I mistake his brother for him, thinking he’s right there at my feet. I truly don’t understand how people—whether on motorcycles or in cars—can be so reckless behind the wheel; in my city, there are accidents involving pedestrians or motorcycles every week, and it seems like the main goal in life for most people with little knowledge of traffic laws is simply to buy a motorcycle. My Rayitas didn’t deserve this—especially since I had rescued him from the streets precisely to protect him from those dangers and from human cruelty. I hope the months he spent with me were good ones and that he is now in kitty heaven with his siblings—that is, my other cats who passed away before him 😭.
