Hello, good morning to all book lovers. I picked up my reading habit again a few months ago, but I'm taking it slow. I must confess that I don't finish a book as quickly as I used to. Today I wanted to start posting my first analyses, even though I haven't finished reading any of the selected books.

I should mention that I'm already familiar with the books and their context. I read some of them many years ago during my school years, but I've been taking the time to reread them at a leisurely pace, in the comfort of my free time.

I started with "Madame Bovary" and I'm already quite far along. I haven't made the mistake of reading several books at once, but rather I'm waiting to finish one before starting the next. Of course, this delays my goal of completing this year's selection of books. But that's okay, I'll take it easy. The point is to enjoy the reading experience, not to finish them in record time.

MADAME BOVARY

๐Ÿ’• Biography of Gustave Flaubert

Gustave Flaubert was a French writer born in Rouen, France, in 1821. He is the third of the great novelists of French realism and was the most demanding and perfectionist in terms of objectivity and style.

The son of a doctor, he studied law in Paris, where he met Maxime du Camp, whose friendship remained with him throughout his life and who accompanied him on many trips. Flaubert spent his entire life at his estate in Croisset, dedicated to writing. Between 1847 and 1856, he had a relationship with the poet Louise Colet, although his great love was Elisa Schlรฉsinger, who inspired the character of Marie Arnoux in Sentimental Education and who never became his lover.

Travel played an important role in his development as a novelist, due to the value he placed on observing reality. Flaubert did not base anything in his works solely on pure inspiration; he first meticulously crafted the style of his prose, in which he desired nothing that was not real. But this reality had to possess the beauty of unreality, so that he revealed no personal experience in his writing nor expressed his own opinions.

alt

His first published novel, and his masterpiece, was Madame Bovary in 1856. This publication brought him rapid literary acclaim, but it also created serious problems for him, as he was attacked by moralists who condemned his approach to adultery. He was even put on trial, which led him to embark on a fantastical and baroque project, as far removed from his reality as possible. This work was Salammbรด (1862), which told the story of the impossible love between a princess and a barbarian mercenary in ancient Carthage.

Gustave Flaubert died in Croisset, France, in 1880. Croisset is a village located on the banks of the Seine River in France, within the Rouen district of the Normandy region. This celebrated writer lived there for 35 years and it was the place where he wrote many of his works, including the novel Madame Bovary. Gustave Flaubert โ€“ Biographies and Lives

๐Ÿ’• Summary of โ€œMadame Bovaryโ€.

Charles Bovary was a small-town boy whose parents waited until he was a teenager to enroll him in school. He was far more attached to his mother than to his father, a doctor who spent more time visiting bars than practicing medicine. He graduated as a doctor amidst a series of missteps, and soon after, his parents married him off to a wealthy widow who turned out to have lied about her dowry. The marriage lasted little more than a year, as the woman died.

Before becoming a widower, Charles met Emma, โ€‹โ€‹the daughter of a patient who took a liking to him. He began spending more time with the family, and eventually married the girl. Emma soon realized she had made a mistake in agreeing to marry Charles, as he turned out to be an absent, puritanical, and spineless husband. She felt ignored and bored. She fell ill, and her husband decided to move to another town, where she gave birth to their daughter, Berthe.

Little by little, she became more integrated into life in that place and befriended the pharmacist, who encouraged her to take advantage of Charles's profession, pressuring him to take risks that could bring him more income. Meanwhile, she went into debt with a vendor, buying a large quantity of luxury items that she later couldn't pay for.

alt

Dissatisfied with her marriage, she began a clandestine affair with a womanizer who ultimately abandoned her. Amidst all this, she fell ill with depression, and to cheer her up, her husband convinced her to take piano lessons with Lรฉon, a young law intern she met the day she arrived in town.

Emma ended up being foreclosed on due to her debts, and when she sought help from her two lovers, who refused, she decided to commit suicide. Her husband, consumed by grief, slowly faded away, and one afternoon, his little girl went looking for him to play and found him dead. Thus, the girl was left in the care of an aunt, as her paternal grandmother died shortly afterward, and her maternal grandfather was paralyzed.

๐Ÿ’• Analysis of the Work

First, the protagonist, Emma Bovary, was a dreamy and imaginative woman who experienced an internal conflict between her fantasies and her reality. Her desire to recreate in real life a love affair like those in the novels she used to read led her to discover that her marriage was as boring as her husband, and she sought in extramarital affairs the passion that resided in her romantic fantasies. On the other hand, Charles Bovary was a quiet, faithful, and boring man who did not perceive his wife's dissatisfaction.

alt

In psychological terms, this work gave rise to "bovarism," which is a disorder characterized by chronic dissatisfaction and the need to feed on illusions and fantasies about oneself that contrast with reality. Analysis by Madame Bovary - Google

ESPAร‘OL

Hoy quise ir publicando mis primeros anรกlisis aunque no he culminado la lectura de ninguna de las obras seleccionadas.

Gustave Flaubert โ€“ Biografรญas y Vidas

๐Ÿ’• Anรกlisis de la obra

Anรกlisis de Madame Bovary - Google
