Gustavo was a kind man when I met him. Sweet, funny, thoughtful. I think that's why I got married. That and because, in this world, women who don't get married before 30 are frowned upon. Yes. Here women have only one purpose: to have children. I was already 28. And what would they think if I didn't get married?
On every street corner in the city there was a huge sign that read: "The family is the basis of society. With four smiling, perfect faces.
So I did the sensible thing: I married the only man I knew who, at least, was not going to mistreat me and the first one who started to make me fall in love.
Actually, I didn't like Gustavo. Neither him nor any other man.
For a while I decided to love him. He would go to his construction job and I would go to mine as a waitress at the bar where we met.Until I got fed up and she showed up.
Camila, the beautiful redhead with freckles and a lipstick smile. I saw her at the bar and... Talking to her made me forget everything, you know? As if she stopped time when she arrived and made it run when she left.
The more I loved her, the less I decided to love Gustavo. But he didn't do much to win my affection either. He came home late, spoke to me in bad tones and went out with absurd demands such as food on the table on time and the occasional massage before bedtime. Because... I was his mistress.
The night I decided it was when Camila kissed me.She, with her beautiful painted lips, in the dark alley outside the bar, kissed me and I didn't even think about it for two seconds. When she left, I went inside, grabbed the gun from the bar owner's hideout and ran home.
It was the only way to get out of the marriage: if one of us died because, in our military regime, it is illegal to divorce.
So, I accelerated the process, and impulsively with a smile of satisfaction I shot him in the head. Getting rid of the weight of my bad judgment, choosing my happiness.
I had no idea that a body weighed so much, but I dragged it to the yard and spent the whole night digging a big enough hole.
I think I slept for two hours, until the sun came up....
Until it all went wrong...
And I opened my eyes to see my late husband looking at me with devotion....
And I was frightened because hadn't I become a woman free to love?
Since then, he only talks about how in his fantasy world I died and I only think about how, in my fantasy world, a gunshot set me free.
And I keep planning how to become free to love without measure.
