With this heat, reading a few stories about space and time is very enjoyable. This small collection is one of two books I bought several weeks ago. Both cost me 20 pesos, quite a bargain considering how prices are for almost everything in Cuba.

At that time, humanity barely knew what might happen if, for example, the movements of translation of the Earth and/or the Moon suddenly stopped—a situation presented in The Man Who Could Work Miracles.
For readers of that era, this information was offered in a curious and even humorous way, but also with a touch of terror at the disasters. That was one of my favorite stories, but so were The New Accelerator and The story of the late Mr. Elvesham.
In several of his stories, Wells uses the protagonist as the narrator of his own tale. I feel that was a style Wells enjoyed using. Perhaps I’m mistaken. There are also some stories that I think could have been shorter, and I say this because sometimes it seemed they had reached the end, but still went on for three or four more pages without adding anything new or interesting to the narrative.
That happened to me, for example, with the story Pollock and the Porroh Man. I also think they could have chosen a better story to close the book, because in the case of The Apple, I felt they could have delivered a more interesting twist to the plot, which made it for me a somewhat empty story. It was like waiting for dessert that never arrived.
Despite my criticisms, I am grateful for the reading, because in these times I live in, enjoying these stories was something truly refreshing. As always, the curious spark to discover new works by the author remains lit.

Con estos calores, leer unos cuantos cuentos sobre el espacio y el tiempo resulta muy agradable. Este pequeño recopilatorio es uno de dos libros que compré hace ya varias semanas. Ambos me costaron 20 pesos, toda una ganga para cómo están los precios de casi todo en Cuba.
Se trata de varios cuentos de H. G. Wells, considerado uno de los padres de la ciencia ficción junto a Julio Verne. Recuerdo incluso haber visto este libro con esa misma edición cuando era mucho más pequeño. Creo que mi hermana era la dueña.

También hay algunos que creo que podían ser más cortos, y lo digo porque a veces me daba la impresión de que llegaban al final, pero aun así se seguía escribiendo por 3 o 4 páginas más, sin aportar nuevos datos interesantes para la narración.

También creo que podían haber utilizado un mejor cuento para finalizar el libro, pues en el caso de La manzana siento que podían haber entregado un giro más interesante a la historia, lo que lo hizo para mí un cuento un poco vacío. Fue como esperar un postre que nunca llegó.
A pesar de mis críticas, agradezco la lectura, pues en estos tiempos que vivo, disfrutar de estos cuentos fue algo muy refrescante. Como siempre, la chispa curiosa por encontrar nuevas obras del autor está encendida.
