Last two months and my enduring gratitude

At almost half a century old, time changes, the way it flows changes. You look back and sometimes see half-spoken words, broken dreams, ideas that resurface in sadness, but the most important thing is to see yourself with patience still firm and intact.

Sometimes I empty my drawers, especially at this time of year, and I see them full of crumpled papers: receipts, tickets, shopping lists, to-do lists, and the occasional note to myself that makes me laugh. How important it is to empty our drawers at least once a year to get rid of everything that no longer serves us. Our hearts are the same; we must get rid of what holds us back and keep what helps us. I always suggest these last months of the year for reflecting on our lives and what we need to take out of our drawers.

Today I want to be grateful, I want to feel grateful for those notes that made me laugh in my drawer and that I didn't want to throw away, for those good memories from the past year. Today I want to thank everyone who was kind to me, even a waitress who smiled, someone who petted my dog in the park—everyone was important this year, making me feel happy, even if just for a moment.

I had few of those big joys, but so many small ones. I had an unexpected call from a friend I hadn't heard from in years, I had plenty of good coffees and teas, and leisurely breakfasts. I had quiet days where I enjoyed my favorite movies, and I bought many books, some I'd always wanted. They were small things, but all together they mean so much to me.

There are two months left in the year, and I'm in no hurry. In two months, you can do so much, you can live and learn so much. It will be enough time to learn something new, even to develop a skill I've always wanted to have. There's still time to reflect on whether I've hurt anyone and to ask for forgiveness, time to forgive myself for the times I wasn't enough. There are two months left to plan for next year, two months left to write a letter to myself.

I'm grateful for each and every moment, I accept that my life has the value I give it. I know my words sometimes fail, but my intentions don't. I want to be good, I want to be better. I'm grateful for life and I'm curious about what these next two months hold, not to salvage the year or make it extraordinary, but to remember it fondly.

For next year, I want more wishes, less rushing, more patience, and more faith. I want to stop and look at trees and flowers and fill my lungs with fresh air. I want to listen to the stories of a wise person and have conversations with strangers without thinking up answers. I want to celebrate small triumphs, both mine and others'. I want joys to come as no surprise because I'll always be ready to be joyful, and I want the bad times to continue teaching me.

In these next two months, I want to write more, and next year, I want to write even more than this year. I want more freedom and less fear in what I write. I want to hug those I love and accept that not everything in life can be fixed, and that learning to let go is also an act of gratitude. I simply want to be happy and thankful.
