Sometimes I look, I look at myself, I look everywhere, I look at myself in the mirror. Sometimes I can't believe it's me that I see in the mirror because what I see are blurred figures, bad versions or incomplete versions. Since I was little I had to learn to change to subsist, to not be different from the rest, and to survive.

Changes have chased me all my life and always arrive with the terror of the new and the unknown. The first change my mind remembers is changing schools when I was barely 8 years old because the truth is I liked my old school, I liked it a lot, I liked the playground and I liked its withered trees. The new school was closer to my father's job and was prettier, but it lacked things: it lacked a playground to run and it lacked the place where I met with my friends. There weren't many, but it was at that school where I first had real friends, the kind you believe will last a lifetime. The teacher called me by a different name, and I was afraid to correct her, so for months she called me by another name, and my classmates too, even when they said the correct name on the attendance list. After more than a month, my teacher realized the mistake and asked me why I hadn't corrected her. I just wanted to cry.

Some say children easily adapt to new conditions because they're developing. I'm not sure that myth of childhood adaptation is true. I vividly remember the bad times I went through that first year at school because I preferred not to speak, I preferred silence and anonymity. Many times I didn't raise my hand in class even though I knew the answer, and I wished I didn't know the answer because I was afraid to answer. And if by mistake I was wrong or someone laughed at me, the terror grew. Fitting in was hard; it seemed that if I took a step toward achieving it, in the next action I'd go back two. Nothing made me feel at ease.

Changes chased me all my life, always with the difficulty of adaptation, even as an adult. Years later, in complete loneliness and waiting to reunite with my children, I moved to a totally different city, totally new and unknown. It was horror, horror reliving everything. The new school was now the city, the playground was streets, and the new teacher was all the pedestrians I met on my way when I went shopping. The new city seemed to have different air that was harder for me to breathe; it's a place at higher altitude. I respected myself trying to find an answerβ€”that's why I breathe with difficulty, I thoughtβ€”but deep down I knew it was the damn change chasing me. I remember the suitcase I arrived with and all the whys and wherefores. "This change will renew you," my son told me on the phone. "In a year we'll be together; I'm preparing the conditions....." I felt I had a wound in my soul and instead of covering it with a bandage, I was rubbing it and leaving it exposed. People spoke my language differently, with new words and other words with meanings different from what I was used to. Adaptation came, and what was one year became two. My accent changed and I adapted to the different coffee. Little by little I lost the fear of them noticing my accent and I adapted wonderfully, and perhaps those were the most expansive years... I learned that adaptation doesn't always happen the same way, not always at the same pace. Sadly, I had to adapt again two years later to a new life, and this was harder, and I think I'm still in that process...

I write this because of an article I read online that I found quite interesting: when the poles melt, penguins can adapt to live in desert conditions. At first I found that article astonishing, then I thought about it more and found it extremely sad. But sadness is part of our life... Sometimes we become penguins... we adapt to places where we're not happy... I too have tried to survive in places where my true self melts and blends into new scenarios. I've worn clothes I didn't like, eaten unsalted food, very spicy food, drunk strong and light coffees, learned new words and forgotten some I grew up with, lost smiles to hide tears, all because deep down I believed it was easier.

Trees grow stronger when pruned, but I wonder if they're living beings that feel it when their branches are cut during pruning. Maybe they resent the gardener because he doesn't explain that this suffering is better for them, that this feeling makes them grow. That their branches will adapt better. Crooked trees are the rebels who resist change. Sometimes I'd like to grow like those trees, but sometimes I understand that one needs to be pruned even if fear appears. And I delay and stretch myself between changing and being honest, or whether there's honesty in change. I suppose I'm still learning through change, learning to grow despite my age, learning which battles to choose: to choose to change or to belong, not to flee, flee from who I am... out of fear. And if in the end I don't fit in, maybe it's because I don't need to, because I'm not made for the mold but to flow.
