As I enjoy my coffee this warm morning with my favorite songs playing in the background, I want to dedicate a few minutes to something I haven't done in a while: I want to dedicate a few minutes to reflecting and writing down my thoughts. Many of us here today, many of you reading this, do that, and we don't realize how lucky we are.
There's a great sense of luck in having time to write, so today I want to have an emotional and written catharsis about it: our time, how we invest it, and how it affects us.
Having time in today's hectic world is a true privilege, a privilege many have given up because there isn't always enough money, we don't always have the job, the dream house. Sometimes we think we're gaining life in a race against time, when we're only leaving behind moments, moments for ourselves that will never come again.
Today I've taken the time to be here for myself, to write, to write what I feel and how I feel it. Perhaps they aren't the best words in the world, but they are just right to reclaim a piece of time amidst my comings and goings.
Now I'm asking you, and I'd love for you to answer: What's the last thing you did with your time for yourself? Not for work, not to help others, just for you. What was that last thing you did simply because you wanted to, and it filled you with satisfaction? It can be anything: reading a book, eating your favorite dessert, going for a walk... Are you still endlessly postponing that fishing trip you've been dreaming about for the last three years?
Perhaps today you should break with everything and dedicate yourself solely to yourself, dedicate the time you've been taking from yourself, for an hour, for a day, for a week. I don't want to get carried away with excessive romanticism; I know you're thinking:
"This sounds very nice, but in practice?"
In practice, you only have one life, and even if you can't live it exactly as you want, do what you can to stay connected to it.
Let's reach a consensus together: you can't quit your job, that's true, you can't spend that week in Japan, there's no money, no way, but why can't you dedicate yourself to dreaming about it, to experiencing it in the closest way possible? Perhaps that week can become an hour watching a travel YouTuber's video that makes you feel like you're walking the streets, or preparing a typical meal from your dream destination.
Life is short, and sometimes we get caught up in planning. Sometimes it's true that we can't do anything to make our plans come true, so doing something for ourselves, something that makes us feel less trapped in routine and the daily grind of work, is a true privilege. There are no excuses for not trying to be a little happier, no reasons to implant the sadness chip in our minds. Fill your life with moments for you and only you, moments you'll remember, moments that at least make you a little less sad.
I also want to share my book recommendation with you today. It's been many months since I've done that, and I consider it an important part of myself. My recommendation for today is the novel When Midnight Comes by Amanda Quick, a gem of a mystery, with everything you need to spend a great week glued to the book: murder, mystery, and drama set in a dark and sinister London. And yes, reading is always the best way to escape, the best way to live when life slips away in days that all seem the same. Reading is having time for yourself, and time very well spent.
