I always have that fluorescent light somewhere between white and blue above me, always hovering over me as if judging me. Today I find myself sitting at my desk, in my office, the same place as always, my fingers tapping the black keyboard at an almost superhuman pace. The skill I've acquired in this job for entering text and numbers on the screen is enormous. Despite the apparent monotony and the daily routine, I feel comfortable, I feel calm, I feel safe. This is my intimate space, where my mind doesn't force itself, it just works in the familiar routine, but sometimes I feel like I'm just dancing in circles. My office is completely white, and my folders are completely beige, and the union of these two colors seems like it will mark my life forever.
"You'll go to the café in the afternoon," my coworker tells me.
"As always," I reply and smile.
I've made good friends here, and that comforts me. Making friends with coworkers isn't always easy. I then return to my Beige routine, and think about how the days repeat themselves, always the same, one after the other, sometimes blending together, sometimes dancing in circles.
Every morning is the same: the walk from the subway to the office, in front of the same bakery that's still had its window broken for as long as I can remember. I greet the guard who never remembers I work there and forces me to take out my ID. I climb the stairs to the third floor, and life in Beige begins. My desk always awaits me, neat and tidy from the day before. There, I begin filling out my desks and answering my emails, filing reports and searching for files, a meeting where we get nowhere, and lunch at the stand I bring from home. I dance in a circle, my steps rehearsed, my dance moves predictable. But that doesn't make me feel bad; sometimes you just have to look beyond.
A lizard has taken up residence under my printer. I don't know how it got here, how it got in. I call it Liz, and around noon, it always pops up and moves its tail to the rhythm of the second hand on the wall clock. Sometimes I stare at it for minutes while I automatically enter numbers with my other hand. In this repetition of daily actions, there is so much beauty, so much calm, so much life.
It's 5:00 a.m., and I begin putting away my things, organizing my workstation, and labeling pending items. The walk to the café is short, but it feels like stepping from one world to another. There, the beige turns to shades of green and brown, and everything smells delicious, toasted, and sweet. My friends from the office wait for me there. Sometimes I'm the one waiting. We always order the same coffees and the same side dishes, some pastries, others sweets. I have friends who draw during that time, others take advantage of it to read, and others just to talk. There's always laughter, always jokes.
"It seems like we're dancing in circles," I tell them.
They laugh and respond, "It's always the same dance, right?"
We laugh, and in that laughter we say nothing and everything, and the sound of the spoons against the cups seems to be the music that guides our dance steps for the next half hour, almost choreographic, almost ritualistic. There's beauty in this monotony, in knowing where your feet will land and what your next move will be, and yet, knowing that the dance is in circles, we decide to dance.
We say goodbye and know that tomorrow the day will be the same and that we all feel the same: dancing in circles, but we don't let the routine trap us, or at least we don't see it as punishment. I've learned to trust that rhythm of intuition because I choose which dance I repeat, over and over again, because in its repetition, in the dance of steps in circles, I find meaning.
Today I won't take the subway; I'll walk.
