In today’s 54 mana battle the ruleset was a bit complicated and because I did not fully understand it I ended up losing the battle. It is very important to understand the ruleset properly and select your monsters accordingly.
The most important thing is to understand the rules so that you can plan your strategy, choose the right monsters and enter the battle with the best possible lineup and abilities.
If the ruleset is difficult to understand your monster selection can be affected which may ultimately lead to defeat. In this 54 mana battle I selected Armor Archon along with six monsters. My opponent chose an Archon with -1 Health and also selected six monsters.
Based on the rules that I understood I built my lineup accordingly. Let’s first take a look at the three rulesets that made this battle more challenging and complicated.
ANEMIC
The first ruleset was Anemic. In this ruleset every monster’s health is reduced to 4 at the start of the battle. It does not matter whether a monster normally has 8, 10 or even higher health, once the battle begins its health becomes 4.
This is the main feature of the ruleset. The biggest impact is on tank monsters because their naturally high health is reduced to only 4. Looking back I should have selected monsters with Heal or Repair abilities.
High damage monsters become extremely dangerous in this ruleset because health is already very low and a single hit can eliminate an enemy. Therefore instead of relying on tanks that depend mainly on high health, it is usually better to select monsters with strong abilities and powerful attacks to take full advantage of the ruleset.
OUTSIDER
The second ruleset was Outsider. This is a fairly simple and common rule. It allows you to summon only one Wild unit. Since you only get one opportunity, it is usually best to choose your strongest Wild monster so that it can have the maximum impact during the battle.
COLLATERAL DAMAGE
The third and most important ruleset was Collateral Damage. This was the rule that created the most confusion for me. In this ruleset all units gain the Reckless ability. What this means is that every successful attack also deals 1 damage to adjacent allied monsters.
For example if my monster attacks an enemy and the attack is successful, one of my nearby allied monsters will also receive 1 damage. Since this battle already had low health because of the Anemic ruleset, adding Reckless made monsters get eliminated much faster.
Because of this it is very important not to place low health monsters next to heavy attackers as they can be eliminated quickly from the extra damage. Understanding these three rules together I should have focused more on strong attackers, healers and monsters with special abilities.
I did choose an aggressive lineup but my deck lacked healers, repair units and abilities that could effectively counter these rulesets. As a result I faced some difficulties in my selection which eventually led to my defeat.
At the beginning of the battle the battle was actually going quite well. Enemy monsters were being eliminated one by one. However my biggest weakness was in the middle positions of my lineup. Because of that three of my monsters were eliminated almost at the same time which significantly weakened my team.
Even though I lost it was still an interesting and enjoyable battle. I got the opportunity to experience and learn some unique rulesets which made the match both educational and entertaining.
What strategy would you use for these rulesets? Which monsters would you prioritize in this battle? Will be glad to see your answers in the comment section.
