Yesterday marked one week since I quit smoking, and it hasn't been as difficult as I imagined. However, there are still very strong low points where I need it. My brain is still programmed to crave nicotine whenever it's stressed, but I'm hopeful that I'll be able to break free from this soon.

Although my experience is quite different from others, I still want to share how this week has been smoke-free. And although it may seem exaggerated, in just one week I already feel like I can breathe again. In the mornings I don't wake up with a cough or phlegm, although at certain points during the day I do cough, but very little, and the phlegm is very dark. I want to think it's my lungs expelling the last trace of nicotine. I have no proof, but I also have no doubt that my lungs are badly damaged.

I used to smoke different brands of cigarettes, but in recent years I preferred this one over the others. This past year, after all the problems I had to deal with because of my son's school, I started smoking more than before. Now I smoke a pack and a half a day, that is, about 30 cigarettes a day. Sometimes I smoked less, but no matter how hard I tried to reduce the daily amount, I couldn't. I used it for EVERYTHING.

If I was happy, I smoked; if I was sad, angry, stressed, after eating, cooking, after showering, after literally any activity, it was like a reward for me, or at least that's how it felt these last few weeks. My wisdom tooth surgery was a huge help in quitting, since I'd been thinking about it for a while but didn't have the courage to do it. I felt like I couldn't live without cigarettes, even though they bothered me so much, because even the smell clinging to my clothes was unbearable. The embarrassment of talking to other people and smelling that awful nicotine, the guilt if someone coughed near me while I was smoking—all of that was going through my mind these last few weeks.

Sometimes I forget and think about sitting down to smoke, then I remember and it gives me a feeling of desperation that I try to control somehow, whether it's by drinking water or distracting my mind by doing some kind of cleaning around the house. This is a really bad habit that unfortunately entered my life when I was 18. It stayed until I got pregnant, and luckily, during those first few months, I felt a terrible disgust for cigarettes and quit just like that. It wasn't hard at all back then. Then, when my son was two, I don't know what happened, but I relapsed again in such a stupid way that it's not even worth talking about. And well, today I'm here again, fighting to quit this awful habit, and even though I miss it terribly, I feel really good about having quit. I've even slept much better this past week, and I'm almost certain that I wasn't sleeping well before because of the cigarettes.
