🇬🇧 English Version
We lost my cousin twice.
The first time was when he stopped coming to family gatherings. We didn't see him at Christmas or on a birthday. There were no more calls, not even an emoji in the family group.
Little by little, he disappeared, and my aunt would just say he was busy, but we all knew otherwise. There were never any questions or attempts to find out why; it was as if his absence was less of a nuisance than his presence. To this day, no one knows what happened, and the worst part is that it seems no one cares.
The second time was when, years later, I found out he had actually died. I found out from a Facebook post someone had accidentally shared, a message with two likes, a pixelated cross, and a date.
That's how I found out.
There was no wake, no announcement, nothing. It was as if even death had been kept to himself.
The hardest part was checking the family group and seeing that no one said anything. NO ONE!... It was as if my cousin had been dead for a while and announcing it would just be a formality.
But you know, finding out didn't hurt the same; what happened before hurt much more. When he was alive but no one cared, as if his presence wasn't worth it, that was what weighed on me the most, that we let him go while he was alive.
Now that he was dead... I don't know, it was like closing a story that had been over for a while.
