I'm usually a vegetarian, but this month I'm vegan to join Veganuary and to experience how is it like to be a vegan.

Veganuary 2024 | Home | The Go Vegan 31 Day Challenge

Last weekend I stayed in a hotel for the first time as a vegan. I knew there was not much I could eat...but I realized that a lot of things are changing, so I write about the food and thoughts I had during my stay.

I mentioned in yesterday's post that my partner booked a one-night weekend stay for me with a hotel voucher seeing me exhausted from he and my daughter coughed a lot.

Sunday Reflections: Importance of Taking Rest (28 Jan 2024) / Sunday Reflections

The stay included a lounge access and breakfast, but there might not be much vegan food available, so I bought snacks at an organic store on my way. It was easy to choose from because vegan products were marked as "vegan."

I bought vegetable chips, chocolate, cookies, and instant soup. When I got to the hotel, my family, who were staying with me until the night, were very excited about the vegetable chips, saying "wow, thanks for buying it" ...

Since it was late afternoon, there were no snacks, so I had to wait for dinner with decaf black. It might be difficult also for people with lactose allergy.

My dinner was ... bread, margarine and fruit. Good that I bought soup.

I love the rich breakfast at this hotel but when you're vegan, there's not much you can eat 😭 I gave up omelets, hash browns, etc.

But I took a closer look and found a vegan section. Vegan cheese, ham, hummus, soy yogurt etc. That's great!

In the end, my breakfast looked like this.

I had never bought vegan cheese before, but I was surprised that it was quite cheese-like and at the same time the phrase "chemical engineering ..." came to mind. I'm going to take a closer look at the ingredients label on vegan cheese at stores. I'm curious about it 🧀 😊

After taking a break from breakfast and came back to the sauna, I found breakfast lined up in the lounge as well. There was oat milk and oat yogurt, more substantial than last night... I tried the oat yogurt. It tasted quite like yogurt.

But when I took a look at the lounge before check out, I saw that the lunch snacks for vegans are fruit. Of course, fruits are tasty. But as an apple pie lover, I wanted to try the apple pie, which was not vegan.

Although I couldn't eat a lot still, I felt that hotel food is changing with the times, with plant-based alternatives being prepared. Also, if you decide to be vegan, you don't eat eggs from hens that are raised in harsh conditions. Unfortunately, most hotels I stayed used eggs with "2" stamp that means hens are kept indoor. Cage keeping is prohibited in Germany though. And as a vegetarian, I am tempted and at a loss I shall eat it or not. Another good thing is that to eat mainly fresh foods such as vegetables and fruits, I feel that I can eat healthier during my hotel stay.

Through the stay, it was also a good opportunity for me to realize what kind of experience vegans have, and also people with allergies.

There are only three days left for Veganuary. I hope to deepen my insight and enjoy it.

Have a nice week!

Sunday Reflections: Importance of Taking Rest (28 Jan 2024) /
