Man is an animal like other animals. The mechanism of our body is not different from other animals. We feel hunger, we get sick, we get angry, we get happy and we do many other things what other animals do. But, we have a big difference. We are civilized animals as Aristotle had said. We have a social structure which is based on families. A family is formed when a man and a woman make a relationship.

Prehistoric man had no need of marriage as their society was similar to the societies of other primates. In those societies, normally one alpha male have the right over other females of the herd. Only alpha male had right to make sexual relationship with females and to have babies. Others could have gained this right after dethroning the alpha male.

In some primitive societies women had more rights than the women of the middle age had. In Matriarchal societies, children were known by the name of their mother. With increasing population various types of struggle also escalated. Gradually man became stronger and begun to dominant woman. He started to treat women as his property. This was not acceptable to other men. With the advent of civilization a need was felt that some rules must be formed to unite the society. So, the system of marriage came into existence. With the institution of marriage need of accumulation of wealth started. Man begun to hand over his wealth to his sons and from his sons, his legacy transferred to his descendents. Women also become more secure as after marriage they become free of uncertainty of life. Institution of marriage also tried to make people monogamous.

Marriages also make families. Our every relation is based on institution of marriage. Marriages not only bind a man and a woman but also unite two families. Everyone is aware that it becomes very difficult to raise children for a single parent. A couple can raise children easily in comparison to a single parent.

Marriage is a contract which binds two person of different sex (now even same sex marriages are becoming acceptable) into one couple and starts family and relations. So, marriages are necessary for maintain social structure. However, it is not necessary for one to marry against one’s own will. It should be done when one really need it. Otherwise, it will create complications only.
