My father has been hospitalized in a public hospital in the city for three days now. We are waiting for an opening so he can undergo surgery; it operates essentially on a first-come, first-served basis—it doesn’t matter whether it’s an emergency or not, only the order of arrival is taken into account. It is incredibly difficult and traumatic to have a loved one in a serious medical condition in a country where there is no guarantee of a decent healthcare system.

In a country where healthcare is supposedly free and a constitutional right, the families of patients are forced to cover the cost of all medications. This is a nation that, thanks to its immense oil wealth, once provided some of the best public services in the world—but then the "white collars" and those in fancy suits arrived, deciding overnight that it was time to ignore the people and instead buy themselves yachts and luxury mansions—a very common saying in my country.

We keep waiting; we have no other choice—or rather, there is another option, but it is far too expensive, and we lack the necessary resources. Meanwhile, the more affordable facilities cannot perform the surgery because he is considered a high-risk patient due to his previous heart complications.

I am praying that an opening finally becomes available so he can have his surgery and we can leave this place—a facility where six patients are treated in the same room, regardless of their individual symptoms.
