A big hello to this fledgling community where I can express the minor frustrations that swirl around my world daily. Today, I had one of those episodes of anger that I experience daily, but this anger was powerful, irritating, and unsettling, and I'll tell you why.
I'm a teacher in a wonderful country that has gone to ruin. Years ago, when being a teacher in this country guaranteed a decent quality of life, I could afford certain luxuries that are now almost impossible, and one of those luxuries is good healthcare. Previously, we had health insurance, surgery, hospitalization, and many times we could even afford not to use the insurance and pay for it out of our own pockets.
Over the years, the healthcare system, like other essential services, has deteriorated, and today we lack any security in this area, and even worse, a decent wage that guarantees us adequate medical care.
Today, after several months of saving from my meager salary, I was finally able to go to the dentist. I felt good about having done it, but it's so sad that something so basic anywhere in the world is such a feat and requires months of saving. I feel angry, frustrated, and above all, disappointed with this chaotic and depressing situation.
The only good thing about today was feeling like I was in a nice, clean, and welcoming place, which contrasts sharply with the public healthcare centers in this country.
I was surprised by a huge, beautiful clock on the wall, as well as the white walls, the lovely seats, the natural plants, and the background music by Ricardo Montaner, a very famous Venezuelan singer-songwriter whose songs have become hits around the world.
Leaving the dental clinic, where I had enjoyed air conditioning at an ideal temperature—neither too cold nor too hot—I opened the door, ready to step outside and face my palpable reality once again, but this time with my teeth and molars in perfect condition.
