taking the ferry to Dønna

it's an exceptionally beautiful summer's day inHelgeland and my friend's sister and husband have been so kind as to offer to take us on a tour out to the islands. the ferry from Sandnessjøen goes to the island of Dønna. something about islands and ferry rides brings out the child in me. we have seen this impressive island from the mainland so today's short journey is loaded with excitement and anticipation.

the island from a distance

getting closer

looking back toward Sandnessjøen and the mountains behind

hindavi enjoying the view and the weather

our friend in purple and her sister and husband seated at the table

approaching the harbor at Dønna

we round these rocks

and sail into the ferry landing

there are hamlets and outposts on the island but not many roads or cars. the preferred means of travel is by boat. as the center of the island is uninhabited and mountainous the few roads that exist are narrow and mostly follow the coast. so there are great spots with wonderful views.

of the mountains, sea and other islands. thirty nautical miles farther out to sea the majestic Trænstaven towers over the oldest fishing village in Norway on the islands of Træna.

it is way out there but maybe we can visit there some other time

but for now we are impressed with the iconic Dønnamannen, with the supine face of a man

visible from many places

along the shore is much flatter with the occasional cottage and grazing sheep

a number of smaller islands are connected by bridges and we are on the way to explore some.
