How Prince Helped Kickstart Warrant's Career
Before Warrant became one of the leading rock bands on the Sunset Strip, they received an unexpected boost from none other than Prince. It was a time when Prince himself was considering a slice of that proverbial cherry pie.
In the fall of 1987, Prince generously offered Warrant $5,000 to record a three-song demo for his label, Paisley Park Records, with the condition that he had the first right of refusal. Ultimately, Prince invoked this right after watching the band's live performance. His assessment was candid but straightforward: "This white kid can sing, and the band has potential, but the motherfucker can't dance."
Speaking to AL.com, Warrant's bassist, Jerry Dixon, shared the band's response to Prince's decision: "He passed on us, dude. So we asked our manager, 'Could you ask Mr. Prince if we can use the demo to shop to another label?'"
Warrant utilized the demo funded by Prince, which included the future hit "Down Boys," to secure a deal with Columbia Records. In 1989, Columbia Records released Warrant's debut album, "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich." Prince probably chuckled at the twist of fate, Dixon noted. "He liked us, but maybe launching a rock band wasn't his label's forte, I guess. There were a lot of those along the way."
Prince's interest wasn't the only major attention Warrant attracted during their rise. Their slick leather outfits, designed by Al Bane, also inspired none other than Michael Jackson. Jackson enlisted Bane to create his look for the "Bad" album in 1987.
Bane was selling his designs at the Country Club in Reseda, California, when Jackson took notice. Dixon recalled, "Somebody in their camp bought this guy's entire booth for like $25,000." The band was highly honored by this acknowledgment. After all, as the saying goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Their influence didn't end there. The cover art for Warrant's debut album featured a drawing by Mark Ryden of "Fugazi," a bulbous, money-grabbing business tycoon. Interestingly, Ryden's artwork also graced the cover of Jackson's 1991 album, "Dangerous," along with the cover for Aerosmith's "Love in an Elevator" single, Red Hot Chili Peppers' "One Hot Minute," and more.
Prince's early interest in Warrant turned out to be justified, as "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich" and its follow-up, "Cherry Pie," both achieved double-platinum success. However, like many other bands, Warrant eventually took a backseat during the grunge revolution. It was simply another sign of the times, reminiscent of their early benefactor.
