When I was in Vietnam some years ago, my tour around in Vietnam, ended in the Mekong Delta, before continuing by boat to Cambodia. Because we were to continue, we chose to stay over night in Can Tho - the biggest city in the delta. From there we had easy acces to the canals and the opportunity to see more of the rural areas and not only the floating markets. These markets are colorful, but I chose the black & white version.
The Mekong Delta is localted in the southwest of Vietnam. It covers a large area between Ho Chi Minh City and Cambodia and consists of a network of tributaries. But the main river, the Mekong has its starting point in the Himalayas and passes through countries like China, Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia before it ends in Vietnam. The delta does have plenty floating markets, but the biggest and probably best known is the Cai Rang floating market in Can Tho.
The reason to visit the delta and the main city of Can Tho is most often because of the Cai Rang floating market. Can Tho is the largest city in the delta. Accomodation is no problem. We stayed here, so that we could start early in the morning and spend most of the day on the waterways. Many tourists come on a daytrip from Ho Chi Minh City, but there is more to see than just this one market. To be able to stay more than one day, gave us the opportunity to spend quite a lot of time on a small boat visiting both smaller canals and the marked.
The delta is known as Vietnam's 'Rice Bowl» because of all the food produced here. The landscape is lush and you will see rice paddies and fields of crops. This area is important as a source of agriculture. I think this area provides food for most of the country. The landscape, especially along the smaller canals are picturesque. Along the way you can sit back in your boat and enjoy the landscape, small settlemendts and local people along the way.
The Can Rang market was an amazing experience as well. The best time is early in the morning before the busses with tourists from Ho Chi Minh City arrives. There are lots of fresh vegetables and fruit for sale. You will see some boats selling food. In case you haven't hav breakfast, you can get yoursels a bowl of noodle soup. We actually bought water melons to bring with us on our tour into the smaller canals.
The photos covers two whole days of exploring the rivers and canals in addition to the floating market in Can Tho. Then we continued to Cambodia, by boat.
