The story:

It's a Wednesday very early in the morning, Rodolfo woke up, turned over in bed and saw the alarm clock, it was already 5.40, the sun would come out soon. When he sat down on the bed, the first thing Rodolfo did was take a cigarette from the bedside table and light it, the second thing was to check the messages on the phone, and when he finished checking the messages, he had already lit another cigarette, and then in the bathroom, he lit another cigarette.

It was impressive, that he smoked three cigarettes, before having a bath, and then kept smoking in the car and at work. The truth is that at that time, Rodolfo, had a very stressful life, he had ninety-five people in his care, who carried out community work, cultural events and health days.

Besides that, he had a national radio program and was doing a master's degree at the university. Normally, he slept from 4 to 5 hours a day, and he ate all three meals on the street, in addition, he ate a lot of junk food and had enormous stress, since he had to be responsible for four communities, give an answer for them, and for the work, which the staff carried out, and the activities carried out in the communities, in front of the authorities of the ministry, where he worked.

—Hi Rodolfo, are you feeling well, do you have a horrible face? — I asked when I saw him in the lift.

—Hi Ruben, I'm a little dizzy, but it's normal these days of the main event. I've hardly had a full night's sleep all week and, we're working almost until 9pm all these days. And when I leave here I go to the radio to record the next day's program, then had dinner on the street, then the blessed meetings and then to sleep in a little, to start running, in the morning again. — He answered me.

—You know, you should stop and go to the doctor, you really look bad. — I commented to him again.

—Don't worry about me, I'm an oak tree, and nothing can do with me. — He said jokingly.

That Wednesday afternoon, when he was reviewing the presentation they were going to make and was going up to the stage to do a sound check, Rodolfo got dizzy and fell to the floor. After a while, when it passed, he received the order from the assistant to the Deputy Minister, to report to the medical service, as he told me.

A little while after Rodolfo arrived, at the medical service, I arrived with Susana, Rodolfo's girlfriend, who asked me the favour of taking her to the clinic.

When Rodolfo was seen by the doctor, the result was really overwhelming, he had very high blood pressure, and although he was given some medication, the blood pressure did not go down, so the emergency doctor decided to send him to a clinic, where I politely took him in my car along with Susana.

At the clinic, after seeing him in the emergency, they called a cardiologist, and while the specialist arrived, he left the room and sat in the waiting room, along with Susana and me. However, instead of resting, he devoted himself to making phone calls, to ensure that all the work was going well.

—Rodolfo, please, put down the phone, rest and forget about the blessed work, if you continue with that life, you are going to end very badly. — Said Susanna, quite annoyed.

At that moment, a man came in and sat down in the waiting room in front of us, and he was looking at us with curiosity, at that moment, Susana and I, we were looking at Rodolfo, we were telling him to stop and rest, but what he was doing was calling, asking work things, giving orders by phone, organizing things remotely and while he was doing it, he was constantly smoking. Me, I think he made about 18 or 20 calls, and he smoked me about 5 or 6, cigarettes in those minutes.

When he finished talking on the phone, Rodolfo started to write down a few lines in his phone book; at that moment, the gentleman who was in the room with us, stood in front of the seat, and put in front of Rodolfo and said, —Hi, I'm Marcos, the cardiologist who is coming to see you. — At that moment, we all introduced ourselves, and then the doctor told Rodolfo that he should enter the room, at least until the tension subsided.

While we were waiting for the blood pressure to drop, Rodolfo had his blood drawn, and we were told that he was going to have some tests ordered by the doctor.

Rodolfo told us that he felt very bad, but not because of the tension, but because of the desire, he had to be at the workplace, doing and organizing the event. Since he felt that everything had to go through his hands and his approval for it to go well, he also felt, as the only one capable of being able to do all the things of his work well.

That day, Rodolfo was dropped off at the clinic. After leaving the clinic, I took Susana to the building where we live, since we are neighbours, and we discussed the health situation and the life that Rodolfo was leading and how risky it was for him to continue like this.

The next day, as Susana told me, the doctor went to see Rodolfo in the morning, and gave him the diagnosis, he had a blood pressure over 170, he was overweight, high triglycerides and cholesterol, fatty liver and constant reflux, with nausea, which were part of a process that if not treated, would end in an intestinal ulcer.

—You know, you are very bad, believe it or not, you can suffer a cardiac arrest and even a stroke at any time.— Said the doctor.

When the doctor was talking to Rodolfo, he was looking for a cigarette, which was a habit, his, to smoke when he got nervous. Susana told me that the doctor, when he saw her looking for the cigarettes, told her, — You should quit smoking, you should diet, you should exercise, you should change your lifestyle and I would recommend that you quit that job, and I'm talking seriously, you can die at any time. —

The doctor, after talking to Rodolfo and Susana, gave them the treatment, and as always, Rodolfo, did not pay attention, he just bought the pills and continued with the same life, two weeks after the events ended, I remember that I got it in the lift, and he had a fever, when I asked him, he told me that it was just a flu, but it ended up being pneumonia, and he was hospitalized and at the clinic he had serious respiratory problems and almost died.

I took Susana to the clinic one day, after Rodolfo had overcome the two respiratory arrests he had been given, and I saw when she told him.

— If you're going to continue with this crazy life and if you're going to continue committing suicide, tell me once and for all, I'm not going to stay with you while you end your life, for doing a job on behalf of a government I don't even believe in. — My girlfriend Susana told me.

The same happened with his mother and with several of Rodolfo's friends, who called him to reconsider and see the life he was leading.

In the end, he decided to turn the page, quit his job, quit the program he had on the radio, since it was about issues of complaints and community conflicts, quit smoking, started doing yoga, and also got into a gym. And finally, he changed his life and did it for the better.

Creative Nonfiction: Un cambio necesario.

— Me contestó.

— Me dijo mi novia Susana.
