Shopping for Time

Alice had a guilty pleasure: getting lost in the city's docks, exploring every nook and cranny of the old fishmongers' quarters, which were passed down from generation to generation and seemed that, through some kind of magic, they could sell the same faded fish every day. Alice loved walking back and forth, entering the old bookstores with the same old books and picking through a dusty pile to purchase a copy for a few coins. The waterfront neighborhoods were forgotten by many, although they were part of everyone's life in the city in one way or another, especially since it was the only available way from the historic part to the new part, which was still undergoing continuous renovations; old buildings gave way to modern shopping malls, flat and modern apartments, and numerous offices.

Alice lived almost on the border between the old and the new, something she really enjoyed and which had made her allergy to dust a curse. A curse that did not prevent her, every weekend, from getting lost in the old stores in search of curiosities. She always felt that something tied her to the antiques she found, something that went far beyond her comprehension. While her friends preferred to go shopping in the malls in search of the latest in fast fashion, she would lose herself in piles of dusty and even moth-eaten second-hand dresses.

Over the years, since she left her parents' house, she had turned her apartment into a sort of museum of antiques: lockets, clothes, mannequins, musical instruments.... Everything he saw that was interesting or connected him in some way to his imaginary past.

One spring afternoon in late April, Alice was walking up and down the main street of the old waterfront district and saw, in the window of one of the stores she was visiting, a long hand-drawn sign, in Romanesque letters somewhere between Gothic and calligraphic, that read: HUGE DISCOUNT. Clearance sale. Everything 50% off. CLOSING. Alice knew the owners of the store; it was one of her favorite places for shopping. She immediately entered and went to the beautiful wooden counter:

-Don Marcos! Have a nice day! -He greeted the clerk with a wide smile from ear to ear, while he took out a handkerchief to wipe his nose due to the great accumulation of dust and odors in the environment.

-My favorite customer, welcome, Alice. I think this will be our last time as a customer and buyer,” Don Marcos replied crestfallen.

-What is it, Don? I read the sign. It sounded strange to me. Haven't you been much of a salesman all these years? -Alice's words or daring brought a smile to Don Marcos' face.

-Alice, little girl, didn't they tell you? -Alice shrugged her shoulders as Don Marcos continued with his story: “They have forced us to sell everything, our belongings and our homes. Everything will be replaced by new shopping centers. We are no longer a site of historical interest for our country and the businessmen are like rapacious wolves on our land. It is impossible for us to live here anymore.

-No way! This is the best place in town... in the world! -Alice shouted.

-I agree, miss, but there's nothing we can do. Progress will make its way. Take advantage of it and make your last purchase.

Alice, saddened, began to wander through the small, narrow aisles of the store, crammed with antique objects and gadgets. She wanted to take everything, everything her eyes could see. But something caught her eye, something she had never seen before, perhaps because of the height at which it was placed or because it had never been there in the first place. A beautiful hourglass, constructed of fine crystal and divinely hand-carved wood. The sand, more golden than usual, shone with a peculiar glow inside.

-Don Marcos! Don Marcos! -He called out to the owner of the store. Can you help me with that watch?

-Watch? -What watch? Oh, there it is. I thought I'd lost it. Alice, I can't sell that watch. It was my great-grandfather's, and your great-grandfather's at the same time. It's been in my family from generation to generation, but if you like it so much, I can give it to you. At this point in my life I won't have anyone to inherit it.

-Mr. Marcos! I can't! You are so kind... -Alice said to him with tears in her eyes.

-Every time you come here, you keep me company, Alice. You're an old soul, the daughter I never had. I think she will be in the best hands,” Don Marcos answered.

Don Marcos approached the ladder to the shelf and, with great agility for his age, lowered the watch and handed it to Alice. At the moment of contact with the ebony from which it was made, Alice had a vision. More than a vision, a kind of magical trance. For a moment, Alice was transported back in time and saw every generation that had passed through the waterfront neighborhood. More than that, she saw it. She saw it with her own eyes: beneath the great square, several meters of catacombs led to the tomb of a forgotten king, perfectly preserved. It was the evidence they needed to protect the neighborhood from imminent reconstruction. Don Marcos' store was not destined to disappear, nor were the old fishmongers or the bookstores he so enjoyed walking through. Something was there that made the neighborhood untouchable: a true historical relic that would need to be protected. Alice came back from her vision and looked at old Don Marcos with sparkling eyes.

-Don Marcos, take the sign down from the entrance. I have a solution. I think there will be waterfront neighborhood and store for a while. I'll keep coming here every weekend for shopping.

Don Marcos looked at her doubtfully, but there was so much determination in Alice's eyes that he didn't hesitate to trust the girl completely.

Me sonó raro.

¡No puedo!
