I had the movie on my waiting list because I had not been able to get the subtitles to watch it. Last night, I finally got some decent subtitles and was able to enjoy this epic film from a country I have seen little cinema from.
Kazakhstan is in Central Asia, that's the only thing I know about that country. One thing I did after I finished watching the movie, was to look up more information and read about its history, I also did a google search and jotted down a list of other movies that I will look for in the future. Most of them are movies about historical warriors from that country, it seems that their ancestors were clans with tough men and a history of wars between them. Have you seen movies from that country? Do you recommend any of them?
I like historical films and preferably when they come from countries about which I have little information, they have a fascinating effect on me. Like an addict, I immerse myself in research and read voraciously on the subject.

Tenía la película en mi disco duro esperando porque no había conseguido los subtitulos para poder verla. Anoche, luego de un tiempo, por fin conseguí unos decentes subtitulos y pude disfrutar de esta épica película de un país del cual he visto poco cine.

Algo que hice cuando termine de ver la película, fue buscar mayor información y leer sobre su historia, también hice una búsqueda en google y anote una lista de otras películas que en el futuro voy a buscar. What is the plot of Tomiris?
The film tells the story of Tomiris, from her birth, daughter of the chief of the clan of the Masagetes, a people who inhabited the steppes of Central Asia. It is a historical biopic about the life of this woman who would become the leader of her people and would go to war with the Persian emperor Cyrus the Great, who wanted to continue conquering territories. My opinion about the movie
Before I tell you my opinion, I want to tell you that it is very subjective, first because I like epic stories with battles and that after reading about the life of this woman, I have been enchanted with everything she did for her people.
I have also discovered in several readings, that she has been represented in literature and pictorial works in Europe. In addition, in recent times she appears in a video game and even a rock band made a song inspired by her. These are things I did not know and thanks to this film I have researched about her and learned something new.
There are different versions of historians about the events narrated, and it is up to each one to accept or not what is narrated, each one doing their own research. In this film the version of Herodotus' writings is adapted. In this link you can read a summary of his life, but do it after watching the movie.
Mi Opinión del film
Antes de decirles darles mi opinión, quiero decirles que mi opinión es muy subjetiva, primero porque me gusta las historias épicas con batallas y que después de leer sobre la vida de esta mujer, he quedado encantado con todo lo que hizo por su pueblo.
También descubrí en varias lecturas, que ha sido representada en la literatura y obras pictóricas europeas. En épocas recientes aparece en un videojuego y hasta una banda de rock hizo una canción inspirándose en ella. Eran cosas que yo desconocía y gracias a este film he aprendido algo nuevo.
Existe versiones distintas de varios historiadores sobre los hechos narrados, ya queda de parte de cada quien aceptar o no lo narrado, haciendo cada uno su propia investigación. En esta película se adapta la versión de los escritos de Herodoto. En este enlace puedes leer un resumen sobre su vida, pero hazlo después de ver la película.
The movie is long. It's about two and a half hours long, so be prepared to stay for quite a while. They recount his life from the time of his birth, to the day his greatest battlefield victory supposedly took place.
It was commissioned by the government of that country, so I could notice an effort to exalt the figure of Tomiris to the maximum. Scenes that convey heroism, a deep love for his people, implacable in the face of his enemies but with enough mercy to spare the lives of the innocent.
I understand that it can be a symbol, a legend within that country and that is why the eagerness to create epic scenes in those arid landscapes of the steppes, with battles of increasing magnitude. Surely they invested a lot of money in the production of this film, because they had to recreate the costumes of the time and we realize the incredible technical and human deployment that was needed to create this audiovisual production.
As far as I could investigate, some criticisms were received towards the film, first because of the version of the legend they decided to tell us and secondly because it seems that there were political interests to favor the image of the daughter of a former president of the country, who has aspirations to come to power. This version that turns Tomiris into a symbol of feminine power could influence the population. I don't know if it was effective or not, the film is from 2019 and I don't know how they handle politics in Kazakhstan.
La película es larga. Dura aproximadamente dos horas y media, así que debes prepararte para estar un largo rato. Cuentan su vida desde el momento de su nacimiento , hasta el día en que supuestamente tuvo lugar su mayor victoria en el campo de batalla.
Fue encargada por el gobierno de ese país, por lo tanto pude notar un esfuerzo en enaltecer extremadamente la figura de Tomiris. Escenas que trasmiten heroísmo, un profundo amor por su pueblo, implacable ante sus enemigos pero con suficiente piedad para perdonar la vida de los inocentes.
Entiendo que puede ser un símbolo, una leyenda dentro de ese país y por eso el afán de crear épicas escenas en esos áridos paisajes de las estepas, con batallas cada vez de mayor magnitud. Seguramente invirtieron mucho dinero en la producción de este film, porque tuvieron que recrear el vestuario de la época y nos percatamos del increíble despliegue técnico y humano que se necesito para crear esta producción audiovisual.
Según pude investigar, se recibieron algunas críticas hacia el film, primero por la versión de la leyenda que decidieron contarnos y segundo porque parece que hubo intereses políticos para favorecer la imagen de la hija de un ex presidente del país, la cual tiene aspiraciones de llegar al poder. Esta versión que convierte a Tomiris en símbolo del poder femenino, podía influenciar en la población. No sé si resulto efectivo o no, la película es del año 2019 y no sé como manejan la política en Kazajistán.
On a narrative level there is not much to highlight. Everything is narrated in a linear fashion, using the figure of Herodotus (that's how I understood it) as the character who writes Tomiris' life. The appearances of this narrator are adequate and do not produce discomfort. They are inserted appropriately and are brief.
The person in charge of directing the story decides to play it safe and does not experiment with anything new. The development of the film is predictable, there is nothing surprising and the battles are good, but none of them, not even the last one, I can say that I was impressed.
It is the negative point of the whole movie. I would have liked that they would have risked to do something different, to create a surprising battle, one of those that leave me breathless. But for me there are many flaws in most of them.
There are a lot of open shots in the battle scenes, with fast camera movements that create confusion and I couldn't determine which side the warriors were from. Also, the costumes, mostly in dark colors and under that pastel photography, confused me.
The music tries to bring the emotion that a film of this type needs, but at times it seemed to me that they wanted to force that feeling. That beautiful shot of Tomiris riding in front of his army is not enough. It lacked more emotion.
In close combat, with the camera focused on certain characters, the result is better, if we can identify the characters and the fight choreographies look real. I was annoyed by the open shots, because you could tell it was a bunch of actors swinging swords in the air.
I like the bloody battles, where the cruelty of human beings is shown. Where characters' guts are decapitated and pulled out. I think that's what this movie lacked, I wanted to see more blood and impact scenes.
With nothing new in terms of narrative technique or effects in the battles, it is the same as many other productions of historical characters from other countries. It is entertaining and I liked it because I knew nothing about the legend of Tomiris and the movie made me interested in her and her country.
One of the things I liked about the film, were the dreamlike scenes of Tomiris, where he faces a beast in the shape of a tiger with wings, totally black and that seems to spit fire, like a dragon.
If you like historical dramas, this film is perfect for you.
A nivel narrativo no hay mucho que resaltar. Todo es narrado de forma lineal, usando la figura de Herodoto (eso es lo que yo entendí) como personaje que escribe la vida de Tomiris. Las apariciones de este narrador son las adecuadas y no producen molestia. Están insertadas de forma adecuada y son breves.
El encargado de dirigir la historia, decide irse por lo seguro y no experimenta nada nuevo. El desarrollo de la película es predecible, no hay nada que sorprenda y las batallas, son buenas, pero ninguna, ni siquiera la última, puedo decir que me impacto.
Es el punto negativo de todo el film. Me hubiese gustado que se arriesgaran en hacer algo distinto, en crear una batalla acojonante, de esas que me dejan sin aliento. Pero para mi hay muchas fallas en la mayoría de ellas.
Hay muchas tomas abiertas en las escenas de batalla, con movimientos rápidos de cámara que crean confusión y no lograba determinar de qué bando eran los guerreros. Además, el vestuario, la mayoría de colores oscuros y bajo esa fotografía de tono pastel, me confundían.
La música intenta aportar la emoción que una película de este tipo necesita, pero a veces sentía que querían forzar ese sentimiento. No basta con esa hermosa toma de Tomiris cabalgando al frente de su ejército. Le falto más emoción.
En los combates cuerpo a cuerpo, con la cámara centrada en determinados personajes, el resultado es mejor, si podemos identificar a los personajes y las coreografías de las peleas se ven reales. Me molestaban eran las tomas abiertas, porque me pude dar cuenta que era un montón de actores blandeando espadas en el aire.
Me gustan las batallas sangrientas, donde se muestren la crueldad del ser humano. Donde se decapiten y saquen las tripas de los personajes. Creo que hizo falta eso en este film, yo quería ver más sangre y escenas de impacto.
Sin nada novedoso en cuanto a técnica narrativa o efectos en las batallas, es igual a muchas otras producciones de personajes históricos de otros países. Es entretenida y a mí me gusto porque no sabía nada sobre la leyenda de Tomiris y la película me hizo interesarme en ella y su país.
Me gustaron las escenas oníricas de Tomiris, donde se enfrenta a una bestia con forma de tigre con alas, totalmente negro y que parece escupir fuego, como un dragón.
Si te gustan los dramas históricos, esta película es perfecta para ti.
The actress
The cast is composed of actors totally unknown to me. I'm sure that for the few who read me they have never heard of them. I'm not going to name them, look for them in the film's IMDB file.
I'm going to talk only about the leading lady. The actress's name is Almira Tursyn and this is her first time in a movie. That's what I gather after looking at her IMDB profile. She has an instagram account: link where you can follow her. If we check her instagram, we find out that she is a psychology professional and that she was selected after a long casting where hundreds of women applied to play Tomiris.
Almira was the lucky one who plays that woman turned legend. I think the actress is beautiful and taking on the challenge of playing Tomiris was a big responsibility. Does she do it well? There are scenes that didn't really move me, she seemed so fragile in the midst of an army of burly men. His Mel Gibson-esque speech to his troops in Breaveheart didn't convince me. But there were other scenes where the character seemed more fluid and comfortable.
I'm going to rate his performance as good, he needs a lot of prep time and it's his first film. I hope he doesn't stay in just one film experience and continues to explore that facet in future productions.

El elenco está compuesto por actores totalmente desconocidos para mí. Seguro que para los pocos que me leen también son profesionales de la actuación que jamás han escuchado de ellos. No los voy a nombrar, búscalos en el perfil del film en IMDB.
Les voy a hablar solo de la protagonista. La actriz se llama Almira Tursyn y es primera vez que hace una película. Eso es lo que deduzco después de ver su perfil en IMDB. Tiene una cuenta en instagram: link donde pueden seguirla. Si revisamos su instagram, descubrimos que es profesional de la psicología y fue seleccionada después de un largo casting donde cientos de mujeres se presentaron para interpretar a Tomiris.
Almira fue la afortunada que interpreta a esa mujer convertida en leyenda. La actriz me parece hermosa y asumir el reto de personificar a Tomiris fue una gran responsabilidad. ¿ Lo hace bien? Hay escenas que de verdad no lograron emocionarme, se veía tan frágil en medio de u ejercito de hombres fornidos. Su discurso ante sus tropas, al estilo de Mel Gibson en Breaveheart, no me convenció. Pero hubo otras escenas, con el personaje mostrándose más fluido y cómodo.
Voy a catalogar de buena su interpretación, necesito mucho tiempo de preparación y es su primera película. Ojala no se quede en una sola experiencia en el cine y continúe explorando esa faceta en futuras producciones.

His name is Akan Satayev. He has directed more than ten films and is also a producer of others. I have not seen anything by this filmmaker nor do I know him. I will try to find other of his films on the Internet to see them. I was fascinated by those strange landscapes, discovering the customs of the nomadic tribes that inhabited Kazakhstan and the legend of Tomiris, a woman who was born to be the leader of her people and according to what the movie tells, she succeeded, defeating a Persian emperor who was ready to conquer all that territory.
I believe the movie is available on a streaming service. Check with the services you have contracted.
Para finalizar, les recomiendo la película. Me fascinaron esos extraños paisajes, descubrir las costumbres de las tribus nómadas que habitaron Kazajistán y la leyenda de Tomiris, una mujer que nació para ser líder de su pueblo y según lo que nos narra la película, lo logro, venciendo a un emperador persa que estaba dispuesto a conquistar todo ese territorio.
