There are directors who have influenced my attempts to create horror works. The script I have written about the genre is full of references to what some film critics labeled as French extreme horror, which encompasses several directors who released their transgressive films in the early 2000s.

One such director is Alexandre Aja, a French filmmaker whose early works were incredibly shocking. His first film, titled Fury, showed small details of his style that would make him a star when he released Huate Tension, in my opinion, still his best film. With this film he won the best director award at the Sitges festival and participated in the Cannes festival in 2003.
I was delighted with the director, also with the rest of the filmmakers who in those years were creating transgressive horror works with a lot of gore. For a lover of horror and blood, the films of Aja, Denis, Dumont, Ozon, Noe, Breillat, among others, are engraved in my mind.
In 2006 Alexandre Aja surprises me with the remake of the cult slasher The Hills Have Eyes, a work that managed to exalt me and that I felt a great pleasure when I enjoyed it in the cinema. He did something wild and surpassing the original film of the master Craven.
The previous films are for me the best of the filmmaker, then his style has softened. Although in 2010 he directed the brutal Piranha -3D with quite a few scenes that quenched my thirst for cinematic blood, plus it had a touch of humor.
Mirrors, The 9th Life of Louis Drax, Horns and Crawl were his next films, each with the filmmaker's visual style and some I liked more than others. But I feel the director has changed and his horror is no longer as extreme as his cool beginnings.
He is still one of my favorites, a few days ago I saw the trailer of his new production, made in France and co-produced with capital from American production companies. Distributed by Netflix, without thinking twice I sat on my couch to enjoy Oxygen.
I like it, it's good, I recommend it? finish reading the review! I reaffirm what I said. The filmmaker is no longer the same as before, but he keeps the talent to lock us with the protagonist in this claustrophobic and suffocating story.

Uno de esos directores es Alexandre Aja, cineasta francés cuyas primeras obras tenían una fuerza increíble. Su primera película, titula Furia, dejaba ver pequeños detalles de su estilo que lo encumbrarían cuando estreno Huate Tension en mi opinión, continua siendo su mejor película. Con este film ganaría como mejor director en el festival de Sitges y participo en el festival de Cannes del 2003.

Las anteriores películas son para mí lo mejor del cineasta, luego su estilo se ha suavizado. Aunque en el 2010 dirigió la brutal Piranha -3D con suficientes escenas que saciaron mi sed de sangre cinematografía, además tenía un toque de humor.

¿Me gusto? ¿Es Buena? ¿La recomiendo? ¡Termina de leer la reseña! Reafirmo lo dicho. El cineasta ya no es el mismo de antes, pero mantiene el talento para encerrarnos con la protagonista en esta claustrofóbica y asfixiante historia.
What is the plot of Oxygen?
Elizabeth Hansen suddenly awakens inside a cryogenic medical capsule. After removing a synthetic material that covers her completely, she finds herself disoriented. She has no memory of who she is or why she is inside the cryogenic compartment. She has a brainwave device in her head, intravenous lines, and her waist and feet are restrained by medical devices. A voice controlling the capsule informs him that a failure has occurred and that he has only 30% oxygen left. This artificial intelligence, called MILO, will be his means of communication with the outside world as he tries to remember who he is and what he is doing there. To get out of the cryogenic chamber he needs some keys he can't remember. He will have small flashes of the past in his memory, but he will not be able to make sense of it. The oxygen is running out, she will die a terrible death if she doesn't get out. Who is Liz really? Who locked her in that capsule? Will they be able to locate her? A character in a totally enclosed capsule. The levels of suffocation and desperation are palpable throughout the film. The filmmaker has the ability to put us with the character and feel all his fears, his anguish, his rage and his hysteria for not finding a way out before the oxygen runs out.
Imagine being locked in a capsule, not even remembering your name or what the hell you're doing in there. At every moment the voice of the artificial intelligence suggests you inject a sedative and the critical oxygen levels are decreasing. It's maddening.
Liz becomes more and more desperate, her heart rate and breathing increase, using up what little oxygen she has left even faster.
We, the viewers, are just like the protagonist, we know absolutely nothing. We don't know who she is, who has put her there and why the failure has occurred. Making us suffer along with Liz of those moments that seem to be the last of her life. An imminent death seems impossible to avoid.
For a moment Liz will have hope of saving herself, but that comes with some incredible revelations. There are two major plot twists within the plot that are of great impact.
I wasn't expecting those revelations, I suggest not watching the trailer in order to fully enjoy the two plot twists that the filmmaker throws at us in this sci-fi film.
Un personaje en un capsula totalmente cerrada. Los niveles de asfixia y desesperación son palpables en todo el metraje de la película. El cineasta tiene la capacidad de meternos junto al personaje y sentir todos sus miedos, angustia, rabia e histeria por no encontrar la forma de salir antes de que se termine el oxigeno.
Imagínense estar encerrados en una capsula, ni recordar su nombre o qué demonios haces allí. A cada momento la voz de la inteligencia artificial te va sugiriendo inyectarte un calmante y los niveles críticos de oxigeno que van disminuyendo. ¡Es para enloquecer!
Liz se va desesperando, su ritmo cardiaco y la respiración aumentan, consumiendo más rápido el poco oxigeno que le queda.
Los espectadores estamos igual que la protagonista, no sabemos absolutamente nada. No sabemos quién es ella, quien la metió allí y porque ocurrió la falla. Haciéndonos sufrir junto a Liz de esos momentos que parecen serán los últimos de su vida. Una muerte inminente parece imposible de evitarse.
Por un momento Liz tendrá esperanza de salvarse, pero eso viene con unas increíbles revelaciones. Hay dos plot twist importante dentro de la trama que son de alto impacto.
Yo no esperaba esas revelaciones, sugiero no vean el tráiler para que puedan disfrutar al máximo de los dos giros de guion que el cineasta nos plantea en esta película de ciencia ficción.
It is true that after all the information is obtained and all the mystery is uncovered, the film loses some tension and offers us an ending that may not leave everyone satisfied, but it was the logical path.
So far I have been careful not to give away anything important and to explain the story in a way that does not contain any spoilers. It is a movie that you have to watch knowing as little as possible about its story, so that the revelations make a dent in the viewer.
As I said at the beginning of this post. The filmmaker has dosed his style. I think if the director had made it in the early 2000's, he would have given us a more savage and raw story. Here there is no gore or extreme scenes that were his personal trademark in his beginnings.
But the setting in that enclosed space, with the excellent work of the actress, make for an entertaining film with a desolate ending.
Es cierto que después de obtener toda la información y el misterio es develado, el film pierde algo de tensión y nos ofrece un final que quizás no deje satisfecho a todos, pero era el camino lógico.
Hasta los momentos he sido cuidadoso en no develar nada importante y explicar la historia de manera que no contenga ninguna spoiler. Es un film que hay que ver sabiendo lo menos posible de su historia, para que las revelaciones puedan causar impacto en el espectador.
Como dije al principio de este post. El cineasta ha dosificado su estilo. Creo que si el director la hubiese hecho a principios del 2000, nos habría dado una historia más salvaje y cruda. Aquí no hay gore ni escenas extremas que eran su marca personal en sus inicios.
Pero la ambientación en ese espacio cerrado, con el excelente trabajo de la actriz, conforman un film entretenido con un desolador cierre final.
The film may be reminiscent of 2010's Buried, directed by Rodrigo Cortez and starring Ryan Reynolds as Paul Conroy, a man who is kidnapped and then buried in a coffin and must figure out how to escape before he runs out of oxygen. Both films only have in common the premise of the protagonist struggling to get out of an enclosed space before running out of precious oxygen and dying. But they are totally different films.
The screenplay is written by Frenchman Christie LeBlanc. It is his most important work. His background is not very extensive, he has been a screenwriter for a TV show and also has experience in the areas of visual effects, production and editing. La película te puede recordar al film Buried dirigida por Rodrigo Cortez en el año 2010 protagonizada por Ryan Reynolds quien interpretaba a Paul Conroy, un hombre que es secuestrado y luego es enterrado en un ataúd y deberá ingeniárselas para poder escapar antes que se le acabe el oxigeno. Ambas películas solo tienen en común la premisa del protagonista luchando por salir de un espacio cerrado antes de quedarse sin el preciado oxigeno y morir. Pero son films totalmente diferentes.
El guion es escrito por la francesa Christie LeBlanc. Es su trabajo de mayor envergadura. Su trayectoria no es muy extensa, ha sido guionista de un programa de televisión y también tiene experiencia en las áreas de efectos visuales, producción y edición. No hay mucha información en su perfil de IMDB. Me gusto el film y voy a seguirla en sus redes sociales para estar atento a sus próximos trabajos. The film had been kicking around among production companies since 2017. At that time several famous actresses had been confirmed as protagonists. But with the passage of time the project underwent changes and the possible protagonist was replaced twice. Even the French filmmaker was not the director who would helm the film. So I see that it is a film that the director has made on commission, of course he has put his personal stamp on it and that is what makes it interesting.
The cinematographer is Maxime Alexandre, who had worked with the director on the film Crawl. They know each other and make a good team. Maxime was also the cinematographer for the Netflix series The Haunting of Bly Manor. It is essential to highlight his work which uses a single location, airtight, but which undergoes several changes throughout the film. The lighting and the creation of the oppressive atmosphere of the capsule is fantastic.
The film's soundtrack is composed by Robin Coudert, a French musician who has focused his career on producing and composing soundtracks for numerous films. Gretel & Hansel, Made in France, Maniac, Empedurment, Papicaha, Les Sauvages, are some of the films that have benefited from Coudert's musical talent.
El film estuvo dando vueltas entre las empresas productoras desde el año 2017. Varias actrices famosas habían sido confirmadas en aquel momento como protagonista. Pero con el pasar del tiempo el proyecto sufría cambios y la posible protagonista fue reemplazada en dos ocasiones. Incluso el cineasta francés no era el director que dirigiría el film. Por eso puedo notar que se trata de una película que el director ha hecho por encargo, por supuesto le ha puesto su sello personal y es lo que la hace interesante.
La dirección de fotografía está a cargo de Maxime Alexandre quien había trabajado con el director en el film Crawl. Se conocen y hacen un buen equipo. Maxime también fue el director de fotografía de la serie de Netflix The Haunting of Bly Manor. Es imperativo resaltar su trabajo que usa un solo lugar, herméticamente cerrado, pero que va sufriendo diversos cambios a lo largo del film. La iluminación y la creación de la atmosfera opresiva de la capsula es fantástico.
La banda sonora del film está compuesto por Robin Coudert, un músico francés que ha enfocado su carrera en producir y componer bandas sonoras para numerosas películas. The beautiful Melanie Laurent, winner of a César award (the French Oscar) in 2006, is the protagonist of the story. She plays Elizabeth Hansen, the woman trapped in that strange cryogenic capsule. When I say absolute protagonist it is because her character is present in 99% of the footage. The camera is on her, focusing on her face, her expressions, her feelings. That's why actors and actresses must be beautiful, imagine me in that movie, no one would stand to see my ugly face, people would be scared to see me in the film. Instead with Laurent's pretty face, it's a movie that mesmerized me.
The last movie I saw with this actress was Michael Bay's explosive (literally) 6 Underground. I'm sure many of you remember her from the movie Now You See Me. I have seen several French films she has worked in: De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté , Indigenes and La Chambre des morts were some where I saw her for the first time, but undoubtedly, the role that made her known beyond France was the character of Shosanna in Inglourious Basterds by my idol Quentin Tarantino. Yes, the one Hanz Landa almost catches at the beginning of the movie and then she executes her bloody revenge against the wretched Nazis.
The entire film rests on her shoulders, the actress manages to emerge victorious from this challenge. Her performance is convincing throughout the film and the emotional shifts must have taken a great deal of effort. The way the film was shot must also have been a difficult job for the actress.
There is another famous French director and actor who is part of the cast, but we don't see him, we only hear him. He is the prestigious Mathieu Amalric, who is the voice of M.I.L.O., the artificial intelligence that interacts with Liz inside the capsule. If you watch the original French version and know the actor, you will recognize his voice immediately.

La hermosa Melanie Laurent, ganadora de un premio Cesar (el Oscar francés) en el año 2006, es la protagonista de la historia. Ella interpreta a Elizabeth Hansen, la mujer atrapada en esa extraña capsula de criogenización. Cuando digo protagonista absoluta, es porque su personaje está presente en el 99% del metraje. La camera esta sobre ella, enfocando sus rostro, sus expresiones, sus sentimientos. Por eso los actores y actrices deben ser guapos, ¿se imaginan a mí en esa película? nadie soportaría ver mi rostro tan feo, la gente quitaría el film. En cambo con el rostro hermoso de Laurent, es un film que me hipnotizo.
El último film que vi con esta actriz fue la explosiva (literal) 6 Underground de Michael Bay. Seguro muchos de ustedes la recuerdan es por el film Now You See Me. Yo he visto varias películas francesas donde ella ha trabajado: De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté , Indigenes y La Chambre des morts fueron algunas donde la vi por primera vez, pero sin duda alguna, el rol que la dio a conocer más allá de Francia fue el personaje Shosanna en Inglourious Basterds de mi ídolo Quentin Tarantino. Si, la que Hans Landa casi atrapa al inicio del film y luego ella ejecuta su cruenta venganza contra los desgraciados nazis.
Toda la película recae en sus hombros, la actriz logra salir victoriosa de este reto. Su actuación fue convincente en todo el film los cambios de emociones ejerciendo un gran esfuerzo interpretativo. La forma en que se rodó el film también debió ser un trabajo difícil para la actriz.
Hay otro director y actor francés famoso que es parte del elenco, pero no lo vemos, solo lo escuchamos. Se trata del prestigioso Mathieu Amalric que es la voz de M.I.L.O la inteligencia artificial que interactúa con Liz dentro de la capsula. Si ves la versión original en idioma francés y conoces al actor, reconocerás su voz de inmediato.
Oxygen kept me for 100 minutes suffering along with Liz. It's not the director's best film, but he delivers an entertaining movie with two plot twists that surprised me. An entertaining product and with an actress who shines in her character.
