I was expecting to find something similar to the earlier films from the filmmaker who directs Voyagers. His story has an interesting beginning, but that spacecraft takes the direction of teenage adventure in space.

Neil Burger strikes me as an effective filmmaker in his earlier films, which were entertaining productions. His first film, a mockumentary, Interview with the Assassin, received three Independent Spirit Award nominations in 2002. I really liked The Illusionist, starring Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti and Jessica Biel. The remarkable The Lucky Ones was also an enjoyable film and in 2011 he directed Limitless , the frenetic film in which Bradley Cooper played a man who by means of a drug maximized his brain potential turning him into a successful person.
All of them are films that fulfill the function of entertaining the viewer. They are not masterpieces, but for me they were good movies.
I stopped watching the filmmaker's films when he entered the realm of juvenile dystopias. He took it upon himself to direct the film Divergent, based on the first book of the literary saga written by Veronica Roth, but I haven't seen it and don't care to see it. Most professional critics think it is a bad movie.
A couple of years later he directed The Upside, the American remake of the excellent French film Intouchables. An unnecessary remake Why remake a recent film? Ah, yes, I know. It's just that Americans don't like to read subtitles. I stopped keeping track of the filmmaker, although he's been working in television with the Billions series.
Last night I stumbled across Voyagers, read the synopsis, found it interesting and wanted to see if the director was back to his old ways and able to make an entertaining film like in the past.
The film has some good moments and a plot that could have had a lot more to it. The potential was huge, but Neil Burger preferred to focus on a youthful adventure without going deeper into the characters.
A missed opportunity to make a science fiction film that would have dealt with more maturity the study of human behavior, violence, sexuality and moral dilemmas in an isolated environment.
The screenplay is also written by Neil Burger, who did not want to get into something transcendental and preferred a light youth entertainment. He was probably influenced by the films Divergent. The Illusionist and Limitless are better films compared to Voyagers.

Su primer filme, un falso documental, Interview with the Assassin, recibió tres nominaciones al Independent Spirit Award en 2002. Me gustó mucho El ilusionista, protagonizada por Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti y Jessica Biel. Se encargó de dirigir la película Divergente, basada en el primer libro de la saga literaria escrita por Veronica Roth, pero no la he visto ni me interesa ver. Un par de años después dirigió The Upside, el remake americano de la excelente película francesa Intouchables. Un remake innecesario ¿Por qué rehacer una película reciente? Ah, sí, lo sé. Es que a los americanos no les gusta leer los subtítulos. Dejé de seguir la pista al cineasta, aunque ha estado trabajando en televisión con la serie Billions.
Anoche me topé con Voyagers, leí la sinopsis, me pareció interesante y quise ver si el director volvía a las andadas y era capaz de hacer una película entretenida como en el pasado.
La película tiene algunos buenos momentos y una trama que podría haber dado mucho más de sí. El potencial era enorme, pero Neil Burger prefirió centrarse en una aventura juvenil sin profundizar en los personajes.
Una oportunidad perdida para hacer una película de ciencia ficción que hubiera tratado con más madurez el estudio del comportamiento humano, la violencia, la sexualidad y los dilemas morales en un entorno aislado.
El guión también está escrito por Neil Burger, que no quiso meterse en algo trascendental y prefirió un entretenimiento juvenil ligero. Probablemente se vio influenciado por las películas Divergente. El ilusionista y Sin límites son mejores películas en comparación con Voyagers.
What is the plot of Voyagers?
In the year 2063 the Earth is suffering the consequences of global warming and an imminent catastrophe may occur (although we are never shown this). To preserve the human species, they have decided to send a mission to a newly discovered planet that meets the requirements to create a human colony. The problem is that the journey will take 86 years. So, using artificial procreation, they raise and educate children totally isolated from the world. They have never seen Earth and are educated in all technical and scientific aspects. Richard Alling, one of the people in charge of training the children, offers to go on the mission with them, knowing that he will die in space, because the idea is that the children's grandchildren will be the ones to reach the planet. Years later, all the crew members are now teenagers, but they receive a substance that prevents them from feeling strong emotions or sexual desires. They are all focused on their mission. They are going to reproduce by artificial insemination and know that many of them will never see the planet they are destined for. Everything changes when Christopher and Zac discover that they are being administered a drug and decide to stop taking it. Soon the worst of human beings emerge in most of the young crew members, causing chaos. Christopher and Sela are the only hope for the mission to succeed. How will the young people react to the new emotions? Will the sexual awakening and the adrenaline rush of power make them go crazy? What will happen to Richard? Will the mission succeed? Will their grandchildren make it to the planet? Or will they kill each other?

Por ese motivo usando la procreación artificial, crían y educan unos niños totalmente aislados del mundo. Nunca vieron la tierra y son educados en todos los aspectos técnicos y científicos. Richard Alling, uno de los encargados de entrenar a los niños, se ofrece para partir en la misión con ellos, sabiendo que morirá en el espacio, porque la idea es que los nietos de esos niños sean los que lleguen al planeta. I think the film had a high potential, according to its plot, to explore and build a work that would study in depth the human behavior that leads us to always end up with an attitude of destruction.
The children were artificially procreated, they did not know their biological parents (the donors) and since their birth they have been kept totally isolated from the outside world. Their whole life has been a training and they lead a life as if they were a spaceship.
The aim of all this is that they have nothing to tie them to earth and are used to living in isolation, since the rest of their lives will be spent inside a spaceship. Let's remember that the trip will last 86 years and most of them will be dead when the mission reaches the planet. It will be their descendants (grandchildren) who will form the first human colony.
All these decisions have been made by the terrestrial scientists in charge of supervising the mission. The crew members sent have no decision-making power, they were born to fulfill an objective for the benefit of science and the survival of our species.
Only Richard, who is the adult, is the one who has decided to spend the rest of his life with the boys on the mission. He alone has had the opportunity to decide. He has sacrificed for everyone.
Opino que el film tenía un alto potencial, según su argumento, para explorar y construir una obra que estudiara con profundidad la conducta humana y que nos impulsa a terminar siempre con una actitud de destrucción.
Los niños fueron procreados artificialmente, no conocieron a sus padres biológicos ( los donantes) y desde su nacimiento los han mantenido totalmente aislado del mundo exterior. Toda su vida ha sido un entrenamiento y llevan una vida como si fuese una nave espacial.
El fin de todo esto es que no tengan nada que los ate a la tierra y estén acostumbrados a vivir en aislamiento, porque el resto de su vida la pasara dentro de una nave espacial. Recordemos que el viaje durara 86 años y la mayoría estarán muertos cuando la misión llegue al planeta. Serán sus descendientes (nietos) los que conformen la primera colonia humana.
Todas esas decisiones han sido tomadas por los científicos de la tierra encargados de supervisar la misión. Los tripulantes enviados no tuvieron el poder de decidir, nacieron para cumplir un objetivo en beneficio de la ciencia y la supervivencia de nuestra especie.
Solamente Richard, que es el adulto, es quien ha decidido pasar lo que resta de vida junto a los chicos de la misión. Solo el ha tenido la oportunidad de decidir. El se ha sacrificado por todos.
How valid is everything that is done on the mission to preserve our species? That's one of the questions I asked myself. When two of the main characters discover that they are given a drug in their food that keeps them submissive, calm, feeling no strong emotions and with sexual desire totally suppressed, they realize that it is something they are doing without their consent. So far so perfect, the reactions of both is believable, they are intelligent and finally make a decision for themselves and stop taking the drug.
The film takes a turn where it spoils everything that was interesting about its plot. Instead of diving into the behavioral changes, the effect of the new sensations unknown to them or showing us the internal conflict that each of the crew members may suffer. The director and screenwriters prefer to keep their characters flat, dividing them into good guys and bad guys, in a battle between teenagers who have lost control.
The whole behavior of the villain and his followers has no credibility in the universe they show me at the beginning. They are born isolated, they are educated to be scientists, they know about physics, aerospace sciences, medicine, technology, etc. In other words, they are young people with a very high IQ. It makes no logical sense that with that intelligence, just because they feel sexual desire, they act like frat boys, allowing themselves to be manipulated with speeches and explanations without any logical support.
Those who become followers of the villain, look like dumb robots, everything the young man says, acting only out of greed and envy, they say yes. Does this make sense? No! All the education received and their intelligence disappears and they act like idiots doing everything the bad guy in the movie orders them to do. This seemed like a joke to me.
The script becomes predictable, basic and the characters absolutely flat. A juvenile battle between two sides. Of course it has its interesting and entertaining moments, but I already know that the questions won't be answered and that the filmmaker wants to give us a youthful adventure, romance included.
What could have been a great science fiction story, ends up being a juvenile space drama.
¿Hasta dónde es válido todo lo que se hace en la misión por preservar nuestra especie? Es una de las preguntas que me hice. Cuando dos de los protagonistas descubren que en su comida le es dada una droga que los mantiene sumisos, calmados, sin sentir emociones fuertes y con el deseo sexual totalmente suprimido, se dan cuenta que es algo que están haciendo sin su consentimiento. Hasta aquí todo perfecto, las reacciones de ambos es creíble, son inteligentes y toman por fin una decisión por ellos mismos y dejan de tomar la droga.
La película da un giro donde dañan todo lo que era interesante de su argumento. En vez de sumergirse en los cambios de conducta, el efecto de nuevas sensaciones desconocidas por ellos o mostrarnos el conflicto interno que puede sufrir cada uno de los tripulantes. El director u guionistas prefieren que sus personajes sean planos, dividirlos entre buenos y malos, en una batalla entre adolescentes que han perdido el control.
Todo el comportamiento del villano y sus seguidores no tiene credibilidad en el universo que me muestran al inicio. Han nacido en aislamiento, educados para ser científicos, saben de física, ciencias aeroespaciales, medicina, tecnología, etc. O sea, son jóvenes con un coeficiente intelectual muy alto. No tiene ningún sentido lógico que con esa inteligencia, solo pro después sentir deseo sexual, actúen como chicos de una fraternidad, dejándose manipular con discursos y explicaciones sin ningún sustento lógico.
Los que se convierten en seguidores del villano, parecen robots tontos, todo lo que dice el joven que actúa solo por codicia y envidia, ellos le dicen que sí. ¿Tiene esto sentido?¡No! toda la educación recibida y su inteligencia desaparece y actúan como idiotas haciendo todo lo que les ordena el malo de la película. Esto me pareció una broma.
El guion se vuelve predecible, básico y los personajes absolutamente planos. Una batalla juvenil entre dos bandos. Por supuesto que tiene sus momentos interesantes y entretenidos, pero ya las interrogantes sé que no serán respondidas y que el cineasta quiere darnos una aventura juvenil, con romance incluido.
Lo que pudo haber sido una gran historia de ciencia ficción, termina en un drama juvenil espacial.
A reflection on which we do not delve
Human beings seem destined to make the same mistakes. For as long as we can remember we have lived in constant wars. Societies that want to control another society. Leaders who become tyrants and lead entire nations into senseless wars. That has been a constant in our history.
That's why the initial plot of the film was so interesting. Children who have had no contact with the outside world, have lived isolated from any influence. They are intelligent and knowledgeable in all scientific fields. Humans molded from scratch to create a new colony on another planet. Will they make the same mistakes as us? Is it in our nature? Is violence innate in every human being?
This film chooses not to delve into that subject, but I can recommend last year's best sci-fi series, Raised by Wolves, which deals with similar themes in greater depth.
Una reflexión en la que no profundizan
Los seres humanos parecemos destinados a cometer los mismos errores. Desde que tenemos razonamiento hemos vivido en constantes guerras. Sociedades que quieren controlar a otra sociedad. Lideres que se conviertes en tiranos y llevan a naciones enteras a guerras sin sentido. Eso ha sido una constante en nuestra historia.
Por eso el argumento inicial de la película resultaba tan interesante. Niños que no han tenido contacto con el mundo exterior, han vivido aislados de toda influencia. Son inteligentes y saben sobre todos los campos científicos. Humanos moldeados desde cero para crear una nueva colonia en otro planeta. ¿Cometerán los mismos errores que nosotros? ¿Está en nuestra naturaleza? ¿Es la violencia innata en cada ser humano?
Este film decide no profundizar en ese tema, pero si te puedo recomendar la mejor serie de ciencia ficción del año pasado, llamada Raised by Wolves, en donde se abordan temas similares con mayor profundidad.
The film is distributed by Lionsgate and one of the producers is Thunder Road Pictures. With an approximate production budget of nearly $30 million, it was released last April in the U.S. and I don't think it managed to gross even a quarter of the costs. The music is by composer Trevor Gureckis, who does a good job of bringing emotion to the scenes of conflict between the 30 young crew members.
Cinematography is by Ecuadorian Enrique Chediak who does a very clean and minimalist job in the sequences inside the spaceship. Chediak has carved out a career in Hollywood, working on great films such as 127 Hours, 28 Weeks Later, Intruders, Chronicles, Charlie St Cloud, among others. I'm glad to see the work of a talented Latin American in the film.
La película ha sido distribuida por Lionsgate y una de las empresas productoras es Thunder Road Pictures. Con un prseupuesto de producción aproximado de casi 30 millones de dólares, se estreno el pasado mes de Abril en los Estados Unidos y no creo que hay logrado recaudar ni la cuarta parte de los costos. La música es del compositor Trevor Gureckis quien hace un buen trabajo dotando de emoción las escenas de conflicto entre los 30 jóvenes tripulantes.
La dirección de fotografía está a cargo del ecuatoriano Enrique Chediak que hace un trabajo muy limpio y minimalista en las secuencias dentro de la nave espacial. Chediak se ha labrado una carrera en Hollywood, trabajando en grandes películas como 127 Horas, 28 Semanas Después, Intrusos, Cronicas, Charlie St Cloud , entre otras. Me contento ver el trabajo de un talentoso latinoamericano en el film.
Colin Farrel plays Richard, the man who volunteers to accompany the children on the colonizing mission. He sacrifices his life on Earth to protect the 30 crew members from the dangers they may encounter on the journey. Although he knows he will never see the planet, because the journey lasts 86 years. The famous actor is the hook used in promos to attract viewers. His performance is very calm and gives some credibility to the story.
Colin Farrel interpreta a Richard, el hombre que voluntariamente se ofrece a acompañar a los niños en la misión colonizadora. Sacrifica su vida en la tierra para proteger a los 30 tripulantes de los peligros que puedan encontrarse en el viaje. Aunque sabe que nunca vera el planeta, porque el viaje dura 86 años. El famoso actor es el gancho usado en las promociones para atraer espectadores. Su actuación es muy calmada y le da algo de credibilidad a la historia.
Lily-Rose Depp plays Sela, the young medical specialist. She gains the trust of Richard, who teaches her many things about life on Earth. Together with Christopher she will be the leader and the heroes who must face the bad guy of the story. I thought her performance was pretty good for this youthful adventure. From the last name you should already know that she is the daughter of the famous Johnny Depp. She is preparing and working to establish herself as an actress.
Lily-Rose Depp interpreta a Sela, la joven especialista en medicina. Ella se gana la confianza de Richard, quien le muestra muchas cosas sobre la vida en la tierra. Junto a Christopher será la líder y héroes que deberá enfrentarse al malo de la historia. Su actuación me pareció lo suficientemente bien para esta aventura juvenil. Por el apellido ya deben saber que se trata de la hija del famoso Johnny Depp. Ella está preparándose y trabajando en consolidarse como actriz.

Fionn Whitehead plays Zac, the young man who gets crazier when he stops taking the drug that keeps them calm. The sexual desire and emotions of anger, rage, etc make him lose his mind making him the villain of the film. I never bought his character. His acting is the worst of the entire cast. The monologues when he addresses the crew members made me laugh. This actor became famous when he starred in Nolan's film Dunkirk. Then he was part of the main cast of the interactive episode of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and a few months ago I talked about him when I reviewed the movie Don't Tell A Soul.
Fionn Whitehead interpreta a Zac, el joven que se pone más loco al dejar de tomar la droga que los tiene calmados. El deseo sexual y las emociones de ira, rabia, etc lo hacen perder la cabeza convirtiéndolo en el villano de la película. Nunca me creí su personaje. Su actuación es la peor de todo el elenco. Los monólogos cuando se dirige a los tripulantes me causaban risa. Este actro se hizo famoso al protagonizar la película de Nolan: Dunkerque. Luego serie parte del elenco principal del episodio interactivo de Black Mirror: Bandersnatch y hace unos meses hable sobre él cuando hice la reseña del film Don't Tell A Soul.
Voyagers is not the film I expected. Its plot could have been improved and created an intelligent work of science fiction. What the director and screenwriters offer is a juvenile adventure in space, with several predictable but entertaining moments.
If you're looking for science fiction with deep reflections the film will disappoint, if you're just looking for a youthful adventure, it's ideal for a distracting time.

Voyagers no es la película que esperaba. Su argumento pudo ser mejorado y crear una obra de ciencia ficción inteligente. El director y guionistas nos entregan es una aventura juvenil en el espacio, con varios momentos predecibles pero entretenidos.
Si buscan ciencia ficción con profundas reflexiones el film te va a decepcionar, si solo buscas pasar el rato con una aventura juvenil, es ideal para pasar un rato de distracción.
