Wielki Budda czyli Phra Buddha Maha Nawamin

The original Big Buddha was destroyed by the Burmese in the 18th century. The monumental statue was then located in Ayutthaya, the former Thai capital. They wanted to rebuild the temple in exactly the same location, unfortunately the exact place of the old temple was not known.

Oryginalny Wielki Budda został zniszczony przez Birmańczyków w XVIII wieku. Monstrualnej wielkości posąg mieścił się wtedy dawnej stolicy Tajlandii w Ayutthaya. Świątynię chciano odbudować dokładnie w tej samej lokalizacji, niestety nie znano dokładnego miejsca starej świątyni.

So it was decided to replicate the Big Buddha in agricultural regions remote from the former capital of Thailand. The works started in 1990 and 18 years later in 2008 the monument was officially put into use. Earlier, in 1982, the reconstruction of the Wat Muang temple with the Buddha was completed.

Postanowiono więc replikę Wielkiego Buddy w rolniczych regionach oddalonych od dawnej stolicy Tajlandii. Prace rozpoczęto w 1990 roku by 18 lat później w 2008 oficjalnie oddać pomnik do użytku. Wcześniej, bo w 1982 roku ukończono rekonstrukcję świątyni Wat Muang w której obrębie znajduje się Budda.

The building is indeed monstrous in size, as it is 92 meters high and 63 meters wide. It was made of a huge amount of concrete and finished with gold paint. Of course, concrete only reinforces the steel skeleton as the interior is empty.

Budowla rzeczywiście jest monstrualnych rozmiarów, wznosi się bowiem na wysokość 92 metrów, a jej szerokość to 63 metry. Wykonano ją z ogromnej ilości betonu i wykończono złotą farbą. Oczywiście beton stanowi tylko wzmocnienie stalowego szkieletu, gdyż wnętrze jest puste.

Apparently, touching the right hand of the Big Buddha will make people who did it endowed with health and happiness. There is no great art in it, because the right hand is hanging and a small platform has been added to help.

Podobno dotykanie prawej ręki Wielkiego Buddy, sprawi, że ludzie którzy tego dokonali będą obdarzeni zdrowiem i szczęściem. Nie ma w tym wielkiej sztuki bo akurat prawa ręka zwisa i jeszcze dostawiono dla pomocy mały podest.

The Big Buddha casts a shadow over the entire temple, monastery, but also the so-called "Hell Garden" (Naraka) - it looks like an extinct amusement park or the land of kitsch.

Wielki Budda rzuca cień na całą świątynię, klasztor ale również na tak zwany "Hell Garden" (Naraka) - wygląda to jak wymarły lunapark lub kraina kiczu.

This controversial or just bizarre garden is filled with various statues depicting various scenes from Buddhist hell.

Ten kontrowersyjny, czy może tylko dziwaczny ogród wypełniony jest różnymi posągami przedstawiającymi różne sceny z piekła buddyjskiego.

I have to admit, watching these macabre theme parks gives you a lot of disgust at the sophisticated ways of torturing sinners. It is full of plastic and devotional folklore of the worst quality.

Muszę przyznać, że oglądając te makabryczne parki tematyczne czuje się duży niesmak patrząc na wyrafinowane sposoby torturowania grzeszników. Pełno tu plastikowo – dewocjonalnego folkloru najgorszej jakości.

A Buddhist judgment condemning evil-doers to eternal damnation, and hungry great spirits waiting for the souls of the dead.

Sąd Buddyjski skazujący złoczyńców na wieczne potępienie, i głodne wielkie duchy czekające na dusze zmarłych.

The impression of disgust is intensified by the fact that previously viewed the intricate decorations and beautifully finished sculptures in a white or blue temple.

Wrażenie niesmaku potęguje fakt, że wcześniej oglądało się misterne zdobienia i pięknie wykończone rzeźby w świątyni białej czy niebieskiej.

In the next part, we can see equally kitschy sculptures? statues? installations? placed in this place because they were probably not needed anywhere else. They depict Gods, the King, warriors, mythical creatures and Thailand and the events of the Burmese-Siamese war.

W dalszej części możemy zobaczyć równie kiczowate rzeźby? posągi? instalacje? umieszczone w tym miejscu bo chyba były nigdzie indziej niepotrzebne. Przedstawiają one Bogów, Króla, wojowników, mitycznych stworów i Tajlandię oraz wydarzenia z wojny birmańsko-syjamskiej.

In all this dubious attraction, in my opinion, the huge Buddha statue is worth seeing, which looks impressive from the bird's eye view. Unfortunately, as in the whole of Asia, incense in the form of burnt garbage provide additional sensations to our aching senses.

W tej całej wątpliwej atrakcji moim zdaniem warty jest obejrzenia ogromny posąg Buddy, który i z ziemi z z lotu ptaka wygląda imponująco. Niestety jak to w całej Azji kadzidła w postaci spalanych śmieci dostarczają dodatkowych wrażeń naszym obolałym zmysłom.
