Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated days of our 21-day trip to Patagonia Argentina was the one when we would go to Refugio Frey, in the city of Bariloche. Trekking is an activity I always like to participate in, and even more so in this winter season, when many of the trails would be covered with snow. Before going to the refuge, I was hoping for a beautiful and breathtaking landscape. Fortunately, my wish came true, making this day one of the most challenging, exhausting and incredible of the whole trip ❤️.
Sin dudas uno de los días más esperados por todos nosotros en nuestro viaje de 21 días por la Patagonia Argentina fue aquel en el que iríamos hasta el Refugio Frey, en la ciudad de Bariloche. El trekking es una actividad de la cual siempre me gusta participar, y más aún en esta temporada de invierno, en donde muchos de los senderos estarían cubiertos de nieve. Antes de ir hasta el refugio, tenía la esperanza de encontrarme con un paisaje hermoso e imponente. Afortunadamente, mi anhelo se hizo realidad, volviendo este día uno de los más desafiantes, agotadores e increíbles de todo el paseo ❤️.
During this nomadic journey, which will soon be a year old, I did a lot of hiking in different parts of my country, Argentina. I had already done some snowshoeing while I was in Ushuaia, but on this trip it was summer and there was only 25% snow on the trail. This time, our three-week trip in the motorhome was in July, in the peak winter season, so we expected the snow to be more present on the treks. When we finally arrived in Bariloche to do the trail to the Refugio Frey, we did get tired of seeing everything snowed in 😃.
Durante este viaje nómada que en breve cumplirá un año, hice un montón de senderismo en distintos puntos de mi país Argentina. Ya había realizado algunas caminatas en la nieve mientras estuve en Ushuaia, pero en ese paseo era verano y solo había nieve en un 25% del camino. Esta vez, nuestro viaje de tres semanas en el motorhome fue en Julio, en la temporada alta de invierno, así que esperábamos que la nieve estuviera más presente en los trekkings. Cuando al fin llegamos a Bariloche para hacer la senda al Refugio Frey, sí que nos cansamos de ver todo nevado 😃.
Of the 14 people in the motorhome, only 12 of us took part in this walk. In the previous days we had been doing other trails of lesser difficulty to check our physical condition, and luckily most of us decided that we were fit to undertake this trek. Our plan was to get to the refuge and spend the night there, as although in summer this trail can be done there and back in the day, with the snow it was much heavier. Besides, we wanted time to rest in the refuge, so we all agreed to sleep up the mountain 😃.
De las 14 personas que éramos en el motorhome, solo 12 participamos de esta caminata. En los días anteriores habíamos estado haciendo otros senderos de menor dificultad para comprobar nuestro estado físico, y por suerte la mayoría decidimos que estabamos aptos para emprender esta travesía. Nuestro plan era llegar al refugio y pasar la noche allí, ya que a pesar de que en verano esta senda se puede hacer ida y vuelta en el día, con la nieve la cuestión era mucho más pesada. Además, queríamos tiempo para descansar en el refugio así que todos accedimos a dormir montaña arriba 😃.
The guide for this trip was the driver of the motorhome, who had travelled this route several times on his previous trips. Having an experienced person for a trek like this helped us all so that no one had an accident and we all arrived safe and sound. He encouraged us to get a good night's rest the night before, as well as preparing a packed lunch with two lunches and dinner, a packet of sweets, dried fruit and nuts and instant soups to get us through the cold when we were up there. I felt like I was on a school trip, but it was good that everything was so well organised 😃.
El guía de esta travesía fue el chofer del motorhome, quién realizó varias veces este camino en sus viajes anteriores. Tener una persona experimentada para una caminata de este tipo nos sirvió a todos para que ninguno se accidentara y todos llegáramos sanos y salvos. Él nos impulsó a que descansáramos bien la noche anterior, además de prepararnos una vianda con dos almuerzos y una cena, un paquete de golosinas, frutos secos y sopas instantáneas para pasar el frío cuando estuviéramos arriba. Me sentí como en una excursión escolar, pero fue bueno que todo estuviera tan bien organizado 😃.
Our hike started in Barrio Los Cohiues, 15 km from the city centre of Bariloche. The two traditional trails to get to the Frey Refuge in Bariloche are 10 km in total, but starting from our neighbourhood we had to add 5 km extra from where the motorhome was parked to the trailhead. We had a long day, so the trekking started at 7.30 AM, at night, while we watched the sunrise on the trail. We made small stops along the way, but by around 12 PM we made the longest stop to have our lunch. The chosen place was the old Petricek Hut, built under a big rock but now abandoned (although there are those who use it anyway when adverse conditions do not allow to reach the Frey Refuge) 😃.
Nuestra caminata empezó en el Barrio Los Cohiues, a 15 km del centro de la ciudad de Bariloche. Los dos senderos tradicionales para llegar hasta el Refugio Frey en Bariloche tienen 10 km en total, pero partiendo desde nuestro barrio tuvimos que agregar 5 km extras desde donde estaba estacionado el motorhome hasta el inicio del sendero. Teníamos un día largo, así que el trekking empezó a las 7.30 AM, de noche, mientras vimos amanecer en el camino. Hicimos pequeñas paradas en todo el recorrido, pero para alrededor de las 12 PM hicimos la más larga para tener nuestro almuerzo. El lugar elegido fue el antiguo Refugio Petricek, construido debajo de una gran piedra pero actualmente abandonado (aunque hay quienes lo usan igual cuando las condiciones adversas no permiten llegar hasta el Refugio Frey) 😃.
I could say that most of the trail was easily passable, except for some parts with solid ice and the last kilometer where the snow had just fallen and you got too stuck when walking. We probably would have needed snowshoes to move around more easily, but we all had our humble trekking clothes and sneakers that did what they could. As we went deeper into the mountain, the landscape became more and more magical, with that transformative capacity that snow has and the white decoration it leaves in its wake ❤️.
Podría decirse que la mayor parte del camino fue fácilmente transitable, menos algunas partes con hielo sólido y el último kilómetro en donde la nieve estaba recién caída y te enterrabas demasiado al caminar. Probablemente hubiésemos necesitado raquetas para movilizarnos con mayor facilidad, pero todos nosotros teníamos nuestra humilde ropa de trekking y zapatillas que hicieron lo que pudieron. A medida que nos adentrábamos en la montaña, el paisaje se iba volviendo más y más mágico, con esa capacidad transformadora que tiene la nieve y el adorno blanco que deja en su paso ❤️.
As we finished the trail, everyone kept their own pace due to the accumulated fatigue. I had already done this trail in the summer and I remembered that the last part was the most difficult, but not as much as this time. As if the soft snow was not enough, almost reaching the shelter gusts of wind began to appear, blowing all the snow into powder and obstructing the view. I must say that this part scared me a little because the wind was very strong and despite the additional weight of my backpack, it managed to destabilize me a little. It was one step at a time until we reached the refuge, and although it was a bit difficult, I was the second in the group to reach the end around 3 PM ❤️.
Ya concluyendo el camino, cada uno seguía su ritmo debido al cansancio acumulado. Yo ya había hecho esta senda en verano y recordaba que la última parte era la más difícil, pero no tanto como esta vez. Como si la nieve blanda fuera poco, casi llegando al refugio empezaron a aparecer ráfagas de viento que volaban toda la nieve hecha polvillo y obstruía la visión. Debo decir que esta parte me dio un poco de miedo porque el viento era muy fuerte y a pesar del peso adicional de mi mochila, este lograba desestabilizarme un poco. Fue un paso a la vez hasta llegar al refugio, y aunque me costó un poco, fui la segunda del grupo en llegar hasta el final casi a las 3 PM❤️.
In my mind I imagined that this place would look beautiful covered in snow, but the expectation was far exceeded by reality. Being July and the middle of winter in Argentina, the landscape was covered in a blanket of white. Walking around the shelter was like a dream, and although we were all very tired and the cold and the icy wind did not invite us to spend much time outside, we still took a moment to enjoy the incredible landscape ❤️.
En mi mente me imaginaba que este lugar se vería hermoso todo tapado de nieve, pero la expectativa fue ampliamente superada por la realidad. Al ser julio y pleno invierno en Argentina, el paisaje estaba todo cubierto por un manto blanco. Caminar por los alrededores del refugio era como un sueño, y aunque todos estábamos muy cansados y el frío y el viento helado no invitaban a estar mucho afuera, igualmente nos tomamos un momento para disfrutar del paisaje increíble ❤️.
Looking back at my post about this place in February, you can see how different this place is from one season to the next. What struck me the most is that what used to be a large lagoon in the summer was now completely covered, with no trace of water. There were even people walking on top of it with their cross-country skis. I love nature and how different everything can be with just a few months of difference: it was definitely worth it to do the whole trail once again 😃.

Lo que más me impactó es que lo que solía ser una gran laguna en el verano, ahora estaba completamente tapada, sin rastro alguno de agua. Incluso había gente que caminaba encima de ella con sus skies de travesía. Me encanta la naturaleza y lo diferente que puede ser todo con solo unos meses de diferencia: sin dudas, valió la pena hacer todo el camino una vez más 😃.

Another of the moments that everyone was looking forward to was the night from here. Once again, bundled up against the cold, we went outside for a while to practice some night shots. As always, I remember that it would be useful to buy a tripod for photos when I need one, so I did what I could by leaning my phone on a rock. My enthusiasm for getting a good photo with my regular phone was admirable, but the wind that cut like knives didn't let me stay outdoors for long either. Of the dozens of photos I took, these were the most decent. I hope you like them 😅.
Otro de los momentos esperados por todos era la noche desde aquí. Una vez más, super abrigados por el frío, fuimos un rato afuera a practicar algunas tomas nocturnas. Como siempre, me acuerdo de que sería útil comprar un trípode para fotos cuando lo necesito, así que hice lo que pude apoyando mi celular en una piedra. Mi entusiasmo por obtener una buena foto con mi celular regular era admirable, pero el viento que cortaba como cuchillos tampoco me dejó estar tanto tiempo al aire libre. De las decenas de fotos que tomé, estas fueron las más decentes. Espero que les gusten 😅.

It only took us three and a half hours to do this trail in the summer, while the winter version took about seven and a half hours. I knew that with the snow it would be a bit more complicated, but not enough to double the walking time. However, the whole experience was worth it, despite the tiredness, the cold, the vertigo and the freezing wind, I think that being in that beautiful landscape was unforgettable. My country never ceases to surprise me and I am more than happy to have the opportunity to visit places like this at different times: wearing both outfits, the Frey Refuge looks beautiful all year round ❤️.
Hacer este sendero en verano solo nos tomó tres horas y media, mientras que en su versión invernal requirió unas siete horas y media. Yo sabía que con la nieve iba a ser un poco más complicado, pero no tanto como para duplicar el tiempo de caminata. Sin embargo, toda la experiencia valió la pena, a pesar del cansancio, el frío, el vértigo y el viento congelado, pienso que el hecho de estar en ese paisaje hermoso fue invauable. Mi país nunca deja de sorprenderme y estoy más que feliz por tener la oportunidad de visitar lugares como este en distintos momentos: usando sus dos outfits, el Refugio Frey luce hermoso todo el año ❤️.
