Choosing to work in the summer in El Bolsón, Río Negro, was a very wise decision. This place is a small town that is "in the middle", perfect to go to other bigger cities in a few hours by bus. Most people who travel to the south of Argentina usually choose Bariloche because it is a bigger and more complete city, but I liked the tranquility of El Bolsón, with the possibility of getting there in just two hours. Although I have been to Bariloche several times (and I plan to keep going), one could never get bored because there are so many things to do that the trip always ends up being worth it ❤️.
Haber elegido trabajar en el verano en El Bolsón, Río Negro, fue una decisión muy acertada. Este lugar es una pequeña ciudad que está "en el medio", perfecta para ir a otras ciudades más grandes en algunas horas de micro. La mayoría de la gente que viaja al sur de Argentina suele elegir Bariloche porque es una ciudad más grande y completa, pero a mi me gustó más la tranquilidad de El Bolsón, con la posibilidad de acercarme hasta allá en apenas dos horas. Si bien ya fui varias veces a Bariloche (y tengo planeado seguir yendo), uno nunca podría aburrirse porque hay tantas cosas para hacer que el paseo siempre termina valiendo la pena ❤️.
During my experience volunteering in hostels to extend my stay in each place, I met a lot of people and some of them are still my friends to this day. One of them is my friend Benji, with whom we met in a hostel in El Bolsón. After two weeks, neither of us liked the working conditions there, so we both moved. I still wanted to get to know El Bolsón, so I got another hostel in the area, while he preferred to go to Bariloche. In spite of everything, we became good friends and never asked for contact 😃.
Durante mi experiencia voluntariando en hostels para extender mi estadía en cada lugar, conocí a un montón de gente y algunos de ellos siguen siendo mis amigos hasta el día de hoy. Uno de ellos es mi amigo Benji, con quién nos conocimos en un hostel de El Bolsón. Luego de dos semanas, a ninguno de los dos nos gustó las condiciones de trabajo en ese lugar, así que ambos nos mudamos. Yo todavía tenía ganas de conocer El Bolsón, así que me conseguí otro hostel por la zona, mientras que él prefirió irse para Bariloche. A pesar de todo, nos hicimos buenos amigos y nunca pedimos el contacto 😃.
One idea we both had was to organize our work schedule so that our days off would coincide and we could get together. We had already been together in El Bolsón, so the plan was for me to go to Bariloche. By coordinating with my colleagues, I managed to get 3 days off in a row so I took advantage of them to visit my friend. The fare from El Bolsón to Bariloche was only $5 and it took two hours to get there, so it was very easy to go. Besides, I would stay at the hostel where he worked, paying about $12 per night. It wouldn't be that much of an expense and I was sure we would have a good time 😃.
Una idea que tuvimos los dos fue la de organizar nuestro cronograma de trabajo para que nos coincidieran los días libres y pudiéramos reunirnos. Ya habíamos estado juntos en El Bolsón, así que el plan fue que yo fuera hasta Bariloche. Coordinando con mis compañeras, logré tener 3 días libres seguidos así que los aproveché para ir a visitar a mi amigo. El pasaje El Bolsón-Bariloche solo costaba $5 y en dos horas llegabas, así que era muy sencillo ir. Además, me hospedaría en el hostel donde trabajaba él, pagando unos $12 por noche. No sería tanto gasto y estaba segura de que la pasaríamos bien 😃.
My new friend Benji is quite adventurous like me and we both enjoy long hikes, so we take advantage of our days together to do some of them. The previous times I had been in Bariloche had always been with my family, so I had never had the opportunity to go and visit the farther reaches of the area. Now, we had two hiking kids together so the opportunity was not to be missed 😅.
Mi nuevo amigo Benji es bastante aventurero como yo y ambos disfrutamos las caminatas largas, así que aprovechamos nuestros días juntos para hacer algunas de ellas. Las veces anteriores que yo estuve en Bariloche siempre había sido con mi familia, así que nunca había tenido la oportunidad de ir a visitar los lugares más lejanos de la zona. Ahora, nos habíamos juntado dos niños caminantes así que no había que perder la oportunidad 😅.
The first day I went to Bariloche I arrived in the afternoon after having worked in the morning, so we only used our time to go for mates next door. On the second day, we already planned one of the long hikes to Refugio Frey. As in El Bolsón, in Bariloche there are a few mountain refuges that require long hikes to reach, where you can stay camping or spend the night. The hike to Frey Refuge can be done in a day and back, so that's what we did 😃.
El primer día que fui a Bariloche llegué por la tarde después de haber trabajado por la mañana, así que solo usamos nuestro tiempo para ir a tomar mates al lado. Al segundo día, ya nos planificamos una de las caminatas largas que sería hasta el Refugio Frey. Al igual que en El Bolsón, en Bariloche hay unos cuantos refugios de montaña que requieren caminatas largas para llegar hasta ellos, en donde podes quedarte acampando o pasando la noche. La caminata hasta el Refugio Frey se puede hacer ida y vuelta en el día, así que eso hicimos 😃.
One of the ways to get to this refuge is to start the hike at the base of Cerro Catedral. This mountain is very famous because it is home to the largest ski center in South America, but in summer it looks like a desert because there is no snow at all. We took a bus which at that time cost us about $2.5 and by 12 PM we were already starting our hike. First we skirted a large part of Lake Gutierrez, and then we went into the forest for a few kilometers 😃.
Una de las formas de llegar hasta este refugio es empezando la caminata en la base del Cerro Catedral. Este cerro es muy famoso porque alberga al centro de ski más grande de Sudamérica, pero en verano parece un desierto porque no hay nada de nieve. Nos tomamos un colectivo de línea que en ese momento nos costó unos $2.5 y para las 12 PM ya estábamos empezando nuestra caminata. Primero bordeamos gran parte del Lago Gutiérrez, para luego meternos en el bosque durante algunos kilómetros 😃.
The estimated duration of this hike is 4 hours, although it can be done in a little less because the terrain is not at all complicated. With about an hour of walking left, you will find an old abandoned shelter, where most people stop to rest for a while before the final slope. The Petricek Hut has an interesting construction, because it uses the space under a rock as a shelter. On the internet it is listed as disused, but surely there is no shortage of those who use it to sleep anyway 😅.
La duración estimada de esta caminata es de 4 horas, aunque se puede hacer en un poco menos porque el terreno no es para nada complicado. Cuando falta una hora de caminata, te encontras con un antiguo refugio abandonado, donde la mayoría para a descansar un poco antes de que llegue el desnivel final. El Refugio Petricek tiene una construcción interesante, porque usa el espacio debajo de una piedra como reparo. En internet figura como en desuso, pero seguramente no faltaran aquellos que lo usan para dormir igual 😅.
Up to the Petricek Hut, the path is quite easy, but from there on the worst part begins for the legs. Whenever it's time to climb, there is a combination of tiredness and euphoria for wanting to finish the trail. In addition, this area was in the summer sun, so the heat made everything worse. However, it is not impossible, you just have to be patient because the best is at the end ❣️.
Hasta el Refugio Petricek, el camino es bastante fácil, pero a partir de ahí empieza la peor parte para las piernas. Siempre que llega el momento de subir se da una combinación de cansancio con euforia por querer terminar de completar el camino. Además, esta zona era al rayo del sol de verano, así que el calor volvía todo peor. Igualmente imposible no es, solo hay que tener paciencia porque lo mejor está al final ❣️.
Three and a half hours after starting the hike, we finally arrived at the refuge. This establishment is small, but much more elegant than any other I have seen in El Bolsón. Its location is very beautiful, surrounded by massive mountains and at the foot of a lagoon. As for the overnight stay, this place was also much more expensive than the shelters in El Bolsón. Sleeping indoors cost $28 (in El Bolsón $15), while camping was free (and in El Bolsón they charged $8). There were also some basic items to buy, but it is always best to bring your own stuff 😃.
Tres horas y media después de empezar la caminata, finalmente llegamos al refugio. Este establecimiento es pequeño, pero mucho más elegante que todos los que ví en El Bolsón. Su ubicación es muy hermosa, rodeada de unas montañas macizas y al pie de una laguna. En cuanto al pernocte, este lugar también era bastante más costoso que en los refugios de El Bolsón. Dormir puertas adentro costaba $28 (en El Bolsón $15), mientras que acampar era gratis (y en El Bolsón cobraban $8). También contaba con algunos elementos básicos para comprar, pero lo mejor siempre es subir con tus propias cosas 😃.
Although the day was very warm, the lagoon was frozen so hardly anyone went in. The name of this lagoon is Toncek, and its warning signs indicated very deep and icy water. My friend and I took the opportunity to get our feet wet and cool off, but I swear that after a while in there you lost all sensibility. The lagoon was nice to look at, but not so nice to swim in 😅.
Si bien el día estaba muy caluroso, la laguna estaba congelada por lo que casi nadie se metía. El nombre de esta laguna es Toncek, y en sus carteles de advertencia indicaba aguas muy profundas y helada. Igualmente me amigo y yo aprovechamos para mojarnos un poco los pies y refrescarnos, pero les juro que después de un rato ahí metido perdías toda la sensibilidad. La laguna era linda para verla, pero no tanto como para nadar en ella 😅.
My friend and I arrived at the refuge at 3:30 PM and stayed until almost 5:30 PM, a time that conditioned us to return if we wanted to get a bus at the base of Cerro Catedral. The last service we had was at 8 PM, so we had two and a half hours to walk what on the way there took us three and a half hours. The turns with lauramica are always like that, adrenaline rushes: we made it all the way and arrived just in time. The ones that didn't come out unscathed by dirt were my boots, but at least they didn't make me slip at any time 😅.
Mi amigo y yo llegamos al refugio a las 3.30 PM y nos quedamos hasta casi las 5.30 PM, hora que nos condicionó a volver si queríamos conseguir un colectivo en la base del Cerro Catedral. El último servicio que teníamos era a las 8 PM, por lo que teníamos dos horas y media para caminar lo que a la ida nos tomó tres horas y media. Las vueltas con lauramica siempre son así, adrenalínicas: hicimos todo el camino a las corridas y llegamos justo a tiempo. Las que no salieron para nada ilesas de mugre fueron mis botas, pero al menos no me hicieron resbalar en ningún momento 😅.

Needless to say, I was glad to have met my friend Benji as he was an ideal companion for this hike. I think we both understood each other very well and the time we spent together was full of laughter. Maybe because we are both Geminians with good humor and a taste for nature, which made us enjoy the experience equally. The Frey Refuge is very beautiful and I was glad to have the opportunity to see it: one of the most beautiful postcards of these treks ❤️.
Demás está decir que me alegré por haber conocido a mi amigo Benji ya que fue un compañero ideal para esta caminata. Creo que los dos nos entendimos muy bien y en todo el tiempo que pasamos juntos las risas no faltaron. Quizás porque ambos somos geminianos de buen humor y con gusto por la naturaleza, lo que nos hizo disfrutar la experiencia por igual. El Refugio Frey es muy hermoso y me alegró tener la oportunidad de haberlo conocido: una de las postales más lindas de estos trekkings ❤️.
