I went to the small market near my street to buy a few things for the week.
I stopped at Mama Eno’s stall because she always had fresh tomatoes and onions. After picking everything I needed, I requested for a reduction in price of the goods. I said: “Madam, please reduce the price for me.”

She looked at me, wiped her hands on her apron, and shook her head gently.
“My daughter, I would have reduced it, but today… there’s no reduction for you.”
I smiled, “Ah-ah, Mama Eno, why?”

She pointed to the empty crates beside her. “Look, everything is cost today. I even sold to the people before you without reducing anything. If I reduce again, I won’t make anything.”

I understood. Things had been expensive lately, and she was trying her best to keep her business going.
“Okay, no problem,” I said. “I’ll still buy it.”
She smiled warmly. “Thank you. Next time, if things are better, I will reduce for you.”

I carried my bag and left satisfied. Even though there was no reduction, the honesty and respect between us made the whole moment simple and real.
