Lifted a 2010 song movie that has kept my soul burning whenever I watch it, over and over again. The movie did not capture my heart because of the songs alone but I have had passion for the military right from my childhood and joining the army has been part of my dream so, the combination of a good selection of songs, the military inclusion and the status change from a bullied, downtrodden boy to a super star worked it magic on me. Also, it shows a part of my life too.
This movie talks about Henry, a boy who was living with his Dad, a mechanic who was also in the army reserves and his mother who was going through a drug therapeutic session and also jobless. One day, in the process of escaping from bullies, Henry took refuge in a church and after playing with the pastor on the church's piano, the pastor found out he had a talent for songs and gave him a flyer for a talent hunt contest. This part reminds me of when I was staying with my Uncle at the army barracks as a young boy and when I first came in, the other boys having being there longer than me always oppress me at the football field. But luckily I happen to feature one day and the coach picked me to play for his team in the upcoming inter-barracks football tournament.
Next, Henry's Dad and his unit of marine reserves were called into action and deployed to the middle east, Afghanistan to be precise and he was unable to attend the talent hunt competition alongside Henry and as a result of financial issues and pressure from here grudging father, his mum slumped back into getting high on drugs. Henry also got a fair share of the bully fron his grandfather before leaving home for the competition without his mother knowing, he told her he was leaving anyway but she was too high to notice.
His Dad came home and not finding his son and saw his wife high, left to join him at the talent hunt, they performed together and were making fair progress until his grandfather saw him on tv and through the help of the church pastor too, his mum and grandfather went to meet him. The officials and Henry were surprised when told Henry has nobody with him at the show. He was told his father had been killed. He got killed while trying to help a woman who claimed she was thirsty but unknown to him, she had been rigged with a bomb, against the advice of his mates, he advanced to help and got killed. That discouraged Henry at the next round. He got knocked out but a participant who was among his greatest rival contestant gave up his place for Henry and together with his father's marine friend who had gotten a letter from Henry's father to help Henry out if he (his father ) eventually gets killed, Henry was able to win the contest.
In my case, after being picked to feature in the football tournament for our barracks, my uncle was so happy and proud of me because he dearly loves football and played it very before joining the army. He promised to find a way to watch all my games and cheer me up. Sadly, about a week before the commencement of the tournament, he got deployed to the northeast here in my country to fight the terrorists, he did return but it was after four years.
