Love is not expressed in words but in action. Loving someone isn't saying, "I love you"; it is what you do that proves your love. When you love your country, you try to protect it; when you love a person, you show them how much you love them by what you do for them.
Love is not selfish but selfless; it means putting yourself in harm's way to protect what or whom you love. The love of a father for his children is sometimes underrated; a father will always show his love for his children through action. He goes to great lengths just to see that they come out better on the other side. The purest form of love is indeed sacrifice.
Hacksaw Ridge is a 2016 movie based on the true-life testament of Desmond Doss, a Seventh-day Adventist who received medals for his service in the Battle of Okinawa.
The movie was directed by Mel Gibson and was written by Andrew Knight and Robert Shenkman.
The movie stars Andrew Garfield as Desmond Doss and other supporting cast members like Teresa Palmer as Dorothy Schutter, Luke Bracey as Smitty Ryker, Vince Vaughn as Sergeant Howell, Hugo Weaving as Tom Doss, Rachel Griffiths as Bertha Doss and many more.
When Desmond doss was younger, he got into a fight with his brother Harold and almost killed him by hitting him on the head with a brick. As his brother lay flat on the ground, Desmond started reminiscing about what he had done and how God frowns on murder, like at a painting in their house that had the inscription of the sixth commandment that said Thou shalt not kill.
The movie also looks at the romantic life of Doss, depicting the pure love between Desmond Doss and Dorothy, the nurse he met at the hospital while he took care of a boy who had an accident.
The best part of the movie for me was the scene where he met Dorothy for the first time and also when he went back to ask her out. He had seen Dorothy as his wife even before he had asked her out; it was love at first sight for him.
Desmond Doss had decided to join the army to participate at the war front like other able men. His conviction against holding a weapon or killing another individual would make it a difficult time in his life and even a difficult time for his family.
His father, who was a war veteran, had always discouraged his children from enlisting in the army, but this was to no avail, as both of his children would enlist in the army. His father has always hated the decision he made to join the army, which made him a drunk and caused him to behave badly toward his wife and children.
Desmond’s life shows that love is proven through action and not words. He had a strong conviction in compassion and faith; he risked his life to save others, even those who doubted him and mistreated him from the beginning. His story was a testament to love.
He was devoted to Dorothy, showing his commitment even before they were married; he was an example that protecting one's country cannot come only through violence. Love is not passive but active; it is an action word.
