I have watched several American movies where people build their houses from scratch, fix their cars, and repair plumbing, electronics and other problems in their homes, and I always feel inspired to do the same. What I see and learn from these movies and social media posts is that with determination, patience and the right tools, even an ordinary person like myself can take on any task. As a result of this, it has helped shape the way and manner in which I approach life and the responsibilities around me.

The things I do for myself that I could easily outsource to a professional range from washing my clothes to cooking, cleaning, trimming, and weeding around the house. It may seem like normal daily house chores, but it is part of the discipline I have insisted upon myself. I also open my electronic devices and gadgets myself most of the time to fix them before seeking the help of a technician when I’m unable to get the job done. These activities help me learn valuable lessons about the tasks themselves and also about my own abilities, teaching me what I can do successfully myself and what requires the help of another. And when I fail, I am still left better off with knowledge that makes me prepared for another challenge.

At the office, when the printer develops a fault, I fix it myself so long as it has nothing to do with part replacement; when my colleagues need help with things of that nature, they call me for help because they know how much I enjoy solving and fixing such problems. And whenever I do that, I find confidence in myself, and it has earned me the reputation of the “fixer” at the office.

Inspired by movies and social media, I have now decided to build myself a wardrobe and a Television stand from start to finish. I will get my materials from the market, take all measurements and build it step by step. I have seen several tutorials on how to build the wardrobe, which will serve as a guide for me, and I am confident I am up to the task, which is a simple step of measuring, cutting and putting together wood, hinges, and locks with nails and screw using the right tools to drive them through.

The advantage of doing these things yourself is clear; among many others, it saves money as well as helps you get exactly what you want, provided that you do it right. It also gives the satisfaction and the sense of pride of creating something with your own hands, which will give you more sense of ownership you would rarely or never get if you had bought it from a store. In a case where it doesn’t go well, you get to learn from your mistakes and get to improve your skills for next time, which is knowledge you will not get from buying finished items from the store.

DIY is not just a hobby but a culture of creativity as well as growth; every nail, every screw and every problem is a step forward to becoming more resourceful and confident, and it is something I will always enjoy doing.
