Life sometimes seems meaningless; we tend to go in circles every day, repeating similar activities, and the cycle keeps repeating. Man struggles just to live for another day; “The cost of living wants to kill the living. As a phrase for the struggle we encounter daily.
The story of the rich fool in Luke 12:16-21 teaches us that our purpose of existence is not to gather wealth for ourselves for the next day, since life is fragile and nobody is promised tomorrow.
I live my life knowing that all that I have are blessings from God, and it would be foolish for me to eat it alone; we are here for a short while, and we should make good use of it as representatives of the Most High.
King Solomon also struggled with this question: why do we labour, strive and wake up each day? In his observation, wealth, pleasure and toiling can prove meaningless, which he described as “Vanity upon vanity”.
A lot of people spend time working just to gather wealth, forgetting that wealth alone does not satisfy. While work is important, it has no ultimate meaning; work and wealth can be enjoyed, but they do not satisfy our soul in the end.
We constantly see and hear of people who have gathered a lot of wealth for themselves, and they remain unhappy, and some don’t live long to enjoy it. This makes us wonder why. We hear the rich say money does not buy happiness, and we don’t believe a word of what they say.
Solomon also believes that in life, there is a season for everything; we have a very short time on earth and chasing material wealth with this time only leaves us empty in the end. This is to say that no human, after accumulating wealth, leaves this earth with his wealth, nor is he buried with it.
Solomon believed that the true purpose of humanity can only be found in God. “Fear God and keep His commandment, for this is the whole duty of man (Ecclesiastes 12:13). Our reason for waking up every dawn of the morning is to reverence God and also to live rightly by what He has commanded of us. There is no deeper meaning in this life that supersedes that.
Food, drinks, relationships and honest work are gifts from God and not something we should strive for, but rather enjoy them as a blessing for serving God and also find joy in them, for they are gifts from God.
Our purpose should not be limited to grinding and paying bills; we were made for the purpose of honouring God. Paying bills, work, food, and other parts of living should not be the centre of our existence but are things that are added as blessings from God and should be enjoyed in that regard and that regard only.
We live our lives in search of peace and happiness, but we start and end in the wrong places to begin with. True peace and happiness are not found in people or in things; true happiness is found in the service of God. People who understand this are those who find joy in the work of their hands. We always say we are searching for our purpose, and we always look in the wrong places for our purpose.
