Gourmet on a Budget: My Visit to a Michelin-Starred Hawker Stall

I rarely go to restaurants because I find that there are hawker food stalls that are doing a great job of making delicious food that's within my budget. And in rare cases, there are hawker stalls that are good enough to even make it to the Michelin Guide Singapore. They are the hawker stalls that offer exceptional food that many of the so-called proper restaurants can't match.

At lunch, I visited one of the 1-star Michelin-starred hawker stalls that serve a nice bowl of pork noodles. The stall is called Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle. I ordered the dry version of the pork noodles!

The name may sound simple but this bowl is complex. There's a variety of pork meat that contributes to the taste, flavor, and texture of the dish. In this bowl are minced pork meat, pork slices, liver, pork lard, pork ball, pork wanton, and dried fish. Those are the toppings that made this dish worth S$8!

What's amazing about this meal is the affordability of the meal. Nowadays, an S$8 meal is considered slightly above average. To have a taste of what Michelin thinks is food that deserves a star and at a price like this is a good deal. It also feels great that I'm able to support a local hawker stall while enjoying a nice meal in the process.

In case you're wondering what a 1-star Michelin can do to a business... a long queue of customers that are willing to wait just to have a taste of pork noodles.

My journey to the world of food.
